Position description

UCLA Extension is considered one of the top programs of its kind, offering to more than 35,000 students per year approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of nontraditional students as well as companies and organizations throughout and beyond the Los Angeles region.

Job Summary – CE III/Academic Department Director:

The Continuing Educator (CE) III/Academic Department Director of Health Sciences and Sciences has primary responsibility for the leadership, administration, management, and coordination of strategic initiatives and programs in the department. As a professional educator of lifelong learners, the CE III/Academic Department Director will be representing UCLA Extension in serving the public through planning, coordination, and implementation of continuing education certificates, courses, conferences, and open seminars with a focus on health care, sciences, and public health. Incumbent will develop collaborations and partnerships with UCLA/UC faculty, Los Angeles communities, government representatives and major industries related to health care, sciences, and public health.

UCLA Extension is a nonprofit and self-sustaining, division of UCLA. The Academic Department Director is responsible for the planning, implementation, and management of a $8M budget. Budget goals project annual growth in total and net revenue while containing expenses.

Responsibilities include direction and supervision of professional staff as well as the administration of multi-discipline programs. The position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs.

The CE III /Academic Department Director serves as liaison to campus divisions and schools including Life Sciences; Physical Sciences; School of Nursing; School of Medicine; School of Dentistry; School of Public Health and ensures effective working relationships with UCLA faculty.

The CE III /Academic Department Director is responsible for managing strategic growth in Health Science and Science certificates by promoting existing programs and developing new certificates, specializations, and courses. The incumbent is also responsible for oversight of instructor selection, evaluation, training, and development as well as consulting on matters of student conduct. They will also collaborate with the UCLA Extension Marketing Department on strategic marketing initiatives related to department programming.

** This position will work on a hybrid schedule (few days in office and few days remotely)**

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities and Competencies:

  • Ph. D. or equivalent in Health Sciences or Sciences.
  • Skill in teaching and conducting research at the university level.
  • Ability to develop and supervise creative, professional development programs in a self-supporting context, in response to changing needs and trends of Extension's various markets and stakeholders.
  • Experience in outreach to governmental and community groups in Health Sciences, Health care or Sciences.
  • Demonstrated skills in: leadership; data analysis; strategic planning; problem-solving management; service excellence.
  • Ability to work independently, be proactive, flexible, and collaborate as a team leader.
  • Leadership and management skills to develop and grow CE talents, and to provide direction and guidance to department staff, CEs and instructors. Experience and demonstrated skill in supervision, including hiring, orienting, training, organizing workflow, delegating responsibility, providing direction, monitoring, and evaluating performance, and coaching, employee performance counseling and disciplining as necessary.
  • Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in report proposal and grant writing as well as all other forms of business and academic communications.
  • Skill in developing innovative professional development programs for health care professionals.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based distance learning formats, instructional design, inclusive teaching methods and techniques for adult continuing education population.
