Job ID: 17844

Updated: March 18, 2019

Location: Foothills Campus

Position Description

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences (http://www.ucalgary.ca/dcns/), in partnership with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI, http://www.hbi.ucalgary.ca/) at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invites applications for a Contingent Term full-time academic position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.

Qualifications include an MD and an advanced graduate degree (MSc or PhD) in research related to the academic profile of the position, Royal College specialist certification in Neurosurgery, clinical fellowship training in functional or pain neurosurgery, and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta. Eligible applicants must have a track record in research. The ability to establish an independent research program as demonstrated by a portfolio of scholarly work, including peer reviewed papers, is a requirement of the position for candidates at the Assistant Professor level. In addition, candidates at the Associate Professor level will have demonstrated the ability to attract external peer reviewed funding to support their research program.

The successful candidate will join the Section of Neurosurgery and will be expected to provide exceptional sub-specialty clinical care in functional and pain disorders of the brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system, and to participate in the general neurosurgery call roster. Clinical interests and expertise could include at least one of the following: surgical treatments of movement disorders, pain, spasticity; deep brain stimulation; radiosurgery; and neuromodulation.

Salary support will be through an alternate relationship arrangement, termed the Academic Medical Health Services Plan (AMHSP) supported by Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services and the Cumming School of Medicine.

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences and the HBI work collectively in advancing world-class neurological research and innovation, together with exemplary patient care.  The successful and suitably qualified candidate will have substantial time protected for research and will receive a generous start-up package.

Inspired by the vision “Healthy Brains for Better Lives”, the strategic goals of the HBI are to make key internationally recognized scientific discoveries and to advance clinical research in neuroscience and mental health.  To achieve this goal, the HBI has created a Neurotechnology Framework, which aligns research within the three themes of Brain & Behaviour, Neural Injury & Repair, and Healthy Brain Aging.  Each theme is composed of Brain and Mental Health Teams organized in a translational continuum, which includes basic, clinical, population and public health researchers. The teams build on a springboard environment of technologies (including a recent investment in MR guided-focused ultrasound), core facilities and support programs that allow them to pursue their research goals.  This highly enriched environment is ideally suited to foster research excellence.
