PHD PROPOSAL NANOHEALTH AND OPTICAL IMAGING

 

 

The research project will be carried out at the research unit of NanoHealth and Optical Imaging at the Faculty of Medicine (KU Leuven, Belgium) and the Molecular Small Animal Imaging Center (MoSAIC). Our team has a high-standing international reputation in the fields of nanotoxicology and nanomedicine. Through the link with MoSAIC, there is ample access to a wide range of non-invasive imaging modalities for preclinical applications.

 

Project

 

The domain of nanomedicine is receiving more and more attention and possesses an enormous potential for a plethora of pathological conditions, including cancer. One of the main advantages of nanomaterials is the ability to combine multiple modalities into a single platform, because of which the nanomaterials can simultaneously be used for diagnostic and therapeutic applications, and multiple therapeutic options can be used at the same time. The major bottlenecks impeding the full exploitation of nanomaterials for biomedical purposes is the need for a higher level of selectivity in terms of targeted delivery of the nanomaterials to the site of interest along with the development of novel, alternative therapeutic options. These topics are the main focus of the research group. 

 

Your role in this project lies in:

 

- investigating the interactions of nanomaterials with their biological surroundings, mainly using high content imaging strategies.

 

- investigating multiple ways to either enhance the delivery of the nanomaterials to the site of interest or to improve therapeutic efficacies.

 

- being open to learning novel methods and techniques (optical imaging, image-based flow cytometry, high content imaging).

 

- being open for learning other imaging methods   (MRI, MRI/PET, variousmicroscopy methods etc).

 

- Providing feedback and progress reports to your supervisors and participating to general lab meetings.

 

- providing service when needed, where you can share your acquired skills and expertise with other researchers and/or students in view of their respective research questions.

- meeting up with your main supervisor on a regular basis to discuss progress on your project and the defined goals.

 

Profile

 

  • Final year Mastersstudent in Bio-Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences or similar.

  • Being interested in the domains of optical imaging and the biomedical applications of nanomaterials are a major advantage.

  • Having experience with and interest in fluorescence microscopy, cell culture and animal handling is a plus.

  • Being passionate to pursue a PhD in this domain.

  • Being dynamic, reliable and accurate.

  • Being a team player, who can also work independently.

Having good communication skills in English.
