Associate Professor of Antibiotic Molecular Medicine/in Vivo Efficacy (Fixed-term, 4,1-years) University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences Denmark

Associate Professor of Antibiotic Molecular Medicine/in Vivo Efficacy (Fixed-term, 4,1-years)

Center for Peptide-Based Antibiotics (Cepan)
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

The University seeks to appoint an associate professor to the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine to commence as soon as possible.
Information on the Department can be found at: and
Job description

The Associate Professor of Molecular Medicine/in Vivo Efficacy will be responsible for in vitro and in vivo efficacy studies of novel antibacterial compounds on clinically relevant bacterial strains.
In response to the critical and increasing worldwide threat to human health posed by emergence of bacterial resistance to currently used antibiotics, the overall aim of the Center for Peptide-Based Antibiotics is to establish a discovery platform that focuses on peptide-based antibiotics by exploiting unleashed advantages of peptides that interact with the bacterial envelope. Discovery of leads, therapeutic strategies and antibiotic targets useful for treatment of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections, and elucidation of mechanism of action and possible resistance are core activities. The University of Copenhagen encourages career development of its assistant professors and the position carries an obligation to conduct some undergraduate teaching within the Medical School.
Center for Peptide-Based Antibiotics (Cepan) was created in 2017 at the University of Copenhagen via funding from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge Programme. Cepan is dedicated to the discovery of novel peptide-based antibiotics against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. The center includes research groups from both the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and Faculty of Science as well as from Statens Serum Institut. The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (ICMM) offers an ambitious scientific environment, with many different nationalities represented. ICMM aims to produce research with high international impact focusing on the functional cell, its genetic components and molecular cellular mechanisms in a medical context. ICMM currently comprises five research programmes, three high profile Research Centers as well as a number of international research groups. The scientists at ICMM are involved in high quality research based undergraduate and graduate teaching programs at the University of Copenhagen. The primary work place will be at Statens Serum Institut.
The associate professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:
  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Planning and execution of microbiology lab work such as MIC determinations, Time-kill assays, checkerboards assays, CFU determinations. The work also involve characterization of antimicrobial resistant strains including detection and characterization of resistance genes and mutations using phenotypical methods or genotypic methods (Whole genome sequencing or classical Molecular techniques) applied to detection and characterization of resistance genes and mutations and related plasmids
  • Execution of mouse infection models: Design and execution of protocols for antibiotic efficacy analyses, implementation/development of new models as well as statistical analysis and report of data.
  • Writing laboratory protocols, scientific reports and manuscripts
  • Coordination of activities and communication of results with Cepan partners
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications

The successful applicant should be able to document holding a PhD in a relevant life science area as well as research qualifications achievable in a position as assistant professor or equivalent within:
  • Microbiological methods with emphasis on antimicrobial tests including: MIC determinations, time kill assays, synergy tests, drug inhibition assays and related methods.
  • Quality assurance of procedures and standardization of Antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods according to CLSI and EUCAST standards.
  • Development and adjustment of microbiological methods
  • Pharmacology of antibiotics including Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics parameters applied to antimicrobial treatment optimization
  • Overview on trends in usage of antimicrobial drugs and on ongoing monitoring of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial usage.
  • Knowledge of processes involved in drug development and licensing and evaluation of antimicrobials.
  • Experimental infection models (holder of Laboratory animal science course FELASA Level C).
  • Characterization of clinical bacterial strains using Whole genome sequencing analysis as well as classical techniques for typing of strains and mobile genetic elements involved in resistance.
  • Experience in Project management related to tasks, timelines and resources
  • Excellent publication track record
  • Track record of close collaboration in international and multi-disciplinary environments
  • Proven ability to present and publish research data
The associate professor is also required to possess good interpersonal skills and communicative skills in Danish and English, both orally and written.
Terms of employment

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2013.
The position is fixed-term for 4,1 years.
