INL is seeking a qualified Post-doctoral Research Fellow to develop and participate in a collaborative project in the area of implantable biosensors in the Nanoelectronics Engineering Department, in a collaboration between INL and 3Bs Research Group from University of Minho.


Job Role & Key Responsibilities

The Post-doctoral Research Fellow will undertake the following main activities and responsibilities:

  • Design, fabricate and test an implantable biosensor to monitor biomarkers and physiological parameters in small animal models of neurodegenerative diseases;
  • Adapt-develop existing electrochemical/impedance/FET based sensors, optical based sensors, or other type of sensor compatible with in-vivo placement, and integrate these with an energy source and RF communications chip allowing data transfer;
  • The prototype will be first tested in vitro (cell culture media) for functionality and signal evaluation, followed by tests in small animal models in collaboration with 3Bs. This work will be done in collaboration with INL’s Nanoelectronics and system integration groups. 


Job Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • PhD in Applied Physics, Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering or related technical fields;
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the topics: electrochemical/ impedance/FET sensors, integrated optical spectroscopy, RF communication solutions allowing chip to base data transfer;
  • High quality publications in international journals;
  • International mobility experience will be highly evaluated.

  • Strong motivation to work both independently and as part of a team in an interdisciplinary environment, with the ability to pay close attention to detail and to meet deadlines;
  • Excellent communication skills and experience in the dissemination of results to the scientific community are expected;
  • Capable of establishing collaborative ties with distinguished academic groups and relevant industry partners.




  • English is the working language of INL. Therefore, excellent communication skills in English are required.
