Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Differentiation Therapy in Acute Myeloid Leukaemia

Radcliffe Department of Medicine, MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford

Grade 7: £31,604 - £38,833 p.a.

Applications are invited for a highly motivated postdoctoral Research Scientist in a programme studying differentiation therapy in adult Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). The post is available fixed-term until 31 January 2022 funded by the Medical Research Council.

The project will integrate genetic, epigenetic and functional data in samples from isocitrate-dehydrogenase (IDH)-mutant AML patients treated with a novel group of drugs that induce differentiation of AML cells by inhibiting mutant IDH enzyme. These drugs can be highly effective in selected patients. The molecular mechanism underlying this differentiation response is not well understood. The aim of the project is to study epigenetic and transcriptional events underlying cell fate decisions in AML cells treated with IDH inhibitors.

You will hold (or due to be awarded soon) a PhD in biology, genetics, biochemistry or in a biomedically-related area. The postholder will have experience in tissue culture, molecular biology and multi-colour flow cytometry (FACS). Previous experience of FACS cell sorting, working with Illumina sequencing platforms and competency in basic bioinformatic analysis (e.g. working from command line, ability to use R biostatistical packages) is highly desirable. Further training can be offered in these areas. We particularly encourage applicants who have made a significant contributions to their field in their careers so far, evidenced by first-authorship or co-authorship of good quality, peer-reviewed scientific papers. The post requires the ability to work as part of a team, but the ability to work independently when appropriate is essential, together with effective communication, interpersonal and organisational skills. We look forward to applications from candidates who have a passion for science and a commitment to pursuing a scientific research career, and aim to provide an excellent environment for their training and career progression.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a CV and a supporting statement as part of your online application.
