Research Assistant/Associate (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a MRC-funded postdoctoral vacancy in molecular microbiology to join a multi-disciplinary team based at Department of Pathology in Central Cambridge studying the gene expression strategies of the obligate intracellular parasite and Toxoplasma gondii and its host. The successful candidate will study translational control mechanisms of both the host and parasite throughout infection.


Candidates should have a PhD, or expect to obtain one shortly, and have a track record of success in molecular parasitology and/or molecular biology research. Where the successful applicant does not yet have a PhD, he/she will normally be appointed as a Research Assistant, salary range of £25,728 to £29,799 on the understanding that he/she will be appointed as a Research Associate, salary range £31,604 to £38,833, upon successful completion of his/her PhD.


Relevant experience in cell culture, biochemistry and molecular biology techniques is essential. Prior experience in standard Toxoplasma techniques, handling biosafety level 2 material, fluorescence microscopy imaging and flow cytometry, would be advantageous. The successful candidate will use a range of next-generation sequencing techniques including ribosome profiling as well as molecular biology techniques such as construction of toxoplasma mutants, cell culture infections, RNA extraction and analysis, recombinant protein expression and purification, protein-protein or protein-RNA interaction assays, radiolabelling, and in vitro translations.


Research Assistant possible duties/responsibilities include undertaking basic research and provide administrative support to colleagues; conduct and record the outcome of experiments and field work; analyse and interpret the results of own research and generate original ideas based on outcomes; conduct literature and database searches; write up results of own research; contribute to the production of research reports and publications; present information on research progress and outcomes to internal and external contacts.


Research Associate possible duties include developing research objectives and proposals for own or joint research; conduct individual and collaborative research projects; write up research work for presentation and publication; assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies; plan the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops as appropriate; may be required to assist in the supervision of student projects, provide instructions to students and deliver seminars relating to own research area.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
