Position Overview

The Department of Physiology & Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months plus a day (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.


Reports to the Principal Investigator.

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct research and perform experiments related to the specific aims of the research projects funding this position.  Specialized technical knowledge and experience with animal (mouse) handling (tumour models), protocols and ethics.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Under general supervision and direction from the PI, develops and implements original experiments within the guidelines of the research

  • Involved in mouse experimentation including tumour implantation, drug delivery and dissection

  • Responsible for tissue culture, maintaining cell lines

  • Conducts data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications

  • Oversees reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment for various users, including the ordering, receiving and maintenance of lab supplies and equipment, as needed

  • Keeps laboratory and work area clean and safe

  • Trains and supports other staff and students in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols

  • Maintenance of lab notes, documentation of research procedures, and upkeep of the lab biosafety manual

  • Involved in IRISS and animal ethics, and responsible for updating of animal protocols as required

  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, PI, senior leadership, and with the campus community

  • Extensive understanding, continued learning and development of safety codes, standards and systems related to specialization


Qualifications / Requirements:

  • MSc in Physiology & Pharmacology/Cell Biology/Biochemistry or related fields. Equivalent experience will be considered

  • Minimum 3 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline

  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues

  • Experience in animal (mouse) handling, tumour models and measurement, and drug delivery

  • Specialized skills in molecular biology and biochemical techniques (DNA, RNA and protein), cell biology as well as cell culture

  • Strong knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques in DNA cloning, enzyme assays and immunoblotting

  • Experience with fluorescence microscopy is an asset

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office as well as specific lab-based software

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and strong organizational skills

  • Must be open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments

  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable

  • Ability to communicate with various levels of management and university groups, as well as external parties to the university
