Salary: $50,000 plus Plan C extended benefits           


The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Health Data Science. This Postdoctoral Scholar will be supervised by Dr. Joon Lee, an Associate Professor of Big Data Science with a joint appointment with the Department of Community Health Sciences and the Department of Cardiac Sciences.


Job Description:

This Postdoctoral Scholar will be expected to:

  • Design and conduct health data science research projects

  • Publish research findings in top journals and conference proceedings

  • Assist Dr. Joon Lee with grant writing

  • Assist Dr. Joon Lee with undergraduate and graduate student supervision

  • Be responsible for some administrative tasks related to research operations



The ideal candidate must have a PhD in data science, medical/biomedical/health informatics, computer science, statistics, biomedical/electrical/computer/software engineering, or a relevant field. In addition, the ideal candidate should be well versed and experienced in most of the following:

  • Data science

  • Machine learning

  • Natural language processing

  • Statistics

  • Big data analytics

  • High-performance computing

  • SQL and NoSQL databases

  • Data/information visualization

  • mHealth

  • Health research


Expertise in the areas listed above is best demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and/or contributions to open-source projects available on GitHub. The ideal candidate should also have excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in Python and/or R is required.
