Position Overview

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

 

The University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute seeks a candidate for the position of Scientist and Manager of the HBI Advanced Light and Optogenetics (HALO) Facility. The goal of HALO is to create an open-access facility which provides the hardware, molecular tools, behavioural suites, training and specialists to enable a large number of CSM researchers and trainees to conduct experiments using cutting edge optical technologies, while minimizing investments of resources required of individual laboratories. 

 

This position reports to the Principal Investigator - Optogenetics platform leader and will work closely with scientists affiliated with HBI Advanced Microscopy Platform (HBI AMP) for developing new imaging tools.  

 

The Research Associate in the HBI Advanced Light and Optogenetics Facility will be required to work with a wide range of Principal Investigators across multiple health science themes and microscopy experts.  

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Oversee reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment for various users, including stocking of all necessary materials and supplies
  • Trains and supervises other staff, students, and Faculty in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols
  • Keep laboratory and work area clean and safe
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Extensive understanding, continued learning and development of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization
  • Responsible for management, maintenance, or control of a specialized area
  • Assist with plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and service
  • Responsible for presentations in producing figures for publication
  • Produce initial drafts of manuscripts for publication and appropriate scientific journals
  • Participate in the design and development of precision equipment and processes
  • Recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices within the lab
  • Responsible of the organization of the day-to-day administration of the laboratory
  • Responsible for ordering, and stock checking
  • Responsible for repairs of equipment, ensuring safety compliance
  • Under limited supervision and direction, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications 

 

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Related University degree required, PhD in Neuroscience, Physiology, Anatomy or similar required

  • Experience with optogenetic techniques, behaviour, electrophysiology, neuronal targeting, small animal surgery and a strength in neuroanatomy

  • Well versed in current biological light-based tools and should have access to a strong network that allows access to new, cutting edge tools

  • Minimum of 3 years of related technical experience within the research specialty field

  • Expertise in the use of these techniques will be assessed based on the candidate's high-quality publications

  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems

  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues

  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques

  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments

  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization

  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment

  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work both independently, and in a team environment

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate academic research aims and results to a wide variety of audiences

  • Strong interpersonal skills, and professional demeanor

  • Intermediate to advanced skills in data analysis. (MatLab)

  • 3 to 5 years of related technical experience within the research specialty field

  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems

  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues

  • Direct and demonstrable research experience in the subject matter of the research project is essential

  • Perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems

  • Recommend change to processes or procedures

  • Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews

  • Provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues

  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques
