Obesity is a global health problem “Globesity” currently affecting over 650 million adults (WHO, 2017). Significantly, obesity is an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease and common precursor to type 2 diabetes. The focus of the Kitmitto group is the delineation of the pathophysiological structure-function remodelling events that develop in the ‘obese’ heart. We have already determined using a diet-induced model of obesity that there is a breakdown of the cardiomyocyte mitochondrial network, resulting in dysfunctional cardiac energetics and impaired contractility. The focus of this project will be to determine the molecular drivers of mitochondrial remodelling and identification of novel biomarkers of cardiac dysfunction. This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team, also working with Dr Elizabeth Cartwright and Professor Joy Wang, to make a major contribution to our understanding of the development of cardiac complications associated with obesity. By the identification of early patho-mechanistic remodelling events we aim to develop new approaches to patient treatment and to prevent disease progression.

 

You must have a PhD or equivalent in a bioscience related degree. Relevant experience in eukaryotic cell culture (including transfection techniques), immunochemical detection, and general molecular biology, biochemical and biomolecular analysis methods are essential. It would be highly advantageous if you have knowledge and practical experience of methods for measuring mitochondrial function. Experience of coordinating projects with small animal models (mice) would be desirable. Ideally, the candidate will also have practical experience of cardiac cell isolation and fluorescent microscopy techniques. While not essential, experience of methods for sample preparation for electron microscopy would be advantageous. The post holder should also be highly motivated, work independently and have excellent organisational, time-management and communication skills.
