The Role

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with a background in qualitative and/or mixed-methods research within a health-related field such as, health services research medicine, medical humanities, Implementation Science, medical anthropology or psychology.


The successful candidate will work closely with a Senior Academic, Professor Frances Rapport, (Lead, Implementation Science Stream) within the Centre for Healthcare Resilience and Implementation Science (CHRIS), to build a portfolio of work relating to innovations in qualitative research methods as applied to health services research questions. They will undertake secondary analysis of current data in epilepsy research and support new grant capture and initiate publication writing, while also presenting study outputs and liaising with others.


Grant capture will concentrate on the major Australian research funding bodies, and other relevant organisations, to ensure research outputs are of the highest standard. In addition, study outcomes will concentrate on those that can be implementable in practice, in order to make a difference to the health and wellbeing of the nation. The successful candidate will support the dissemination of outputs, liaising with interested stakeholder groups (including, for example, epileptologists and specialist nurses), and ensuring that the work is well-grounded within different qualitative methodological paradigms.


About You

You will be an enthusiastic researcher who has a clear understanding of how to apply qualitative research methods to health services research questions, and how to analyse qualitative data (by hand and/or with the support of computer analysis packages). You will enjoy working both independently and as part of a team, and will be able and willing to take part in team activities such as group analysis work. You will have excellent time-management skills, being able to meet tight deadlines, prioritising work accordingly and adapt workloads as necessary. Preferably you will also have knowledge of, and experience with, Implementation Science, as this work with be steeped in the implementation of strong study findings into working solutions to healthcare practice improvement.

The Centre for Healthcare Resilience and Implementation Science (CHRIS) is part of the Australian Institute of Health Innovation within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science and, has a successful track record of undertaking research and evaluation projects on health sector issues since 1991. Its core interest is to investigate issues of policy, governance and leadership in the health sector. It is involved in conducting original research into clinical governance issues, providing a scholarly capability by which to evaluate health sector policies, programs and projects, and contributing to undergraduate medical, postgraduate health services management, and public health and doctoral education.

Selection criteria:

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant health-related discipline (e.g. health services research, Implementation Science, medical sciences, medical anthropology, psychology)
  • Experience of successfully applying qualitative research methods to healthcare data or similar data
  • Experience of analysing qualitative and mixed-method data in a health-related discipline
  • Demonstrable research track record
  • Demonstrated record in publication and report writing
  • Ability to liaise effectively with different stakeholder groups (including healthcare professionals, academics, researchers, members of the public, and students)
  • Project management skills including the ability to prioritise different work demands
  • Experience in the preparation of ethics applications and grant applications
