Position Description

The Department of Community Health Sciences, in partnership with the O’Brien Institute for Public Health in the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services invite applications for a Research Scientist, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) as a contingent-term academic position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The Research Scientist will have a research concentration in IPC, healthcare epidemiology and health economics, including the design and evaluative processes in IPC practice-based questions related to patient safety, quality of care and economic impacts.


Qualifications include a PhD (or equivalent) with relevant training or experience in epidemiology and health economics. Experience in IPC is required, ideally in a healthcare organization of a significant size, complexity and diversity. In addition to IPC experience, the individual will possess expertise in healthcare epidemiology, surveillance methods and expertise in mobilizing knowledge to action, as well as experience in health economics. The Research Scientist will have a proven record of excellence in research as demonstrated by scholarly publications and the potential to compete successfully for national granting agencies such as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The Research Scientist will develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders and leaders and build strong positive relationships with key local, provincial, national, and international representatives and health care stakeholders including government departments and officials. This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop an independent research program with collaborative interactions in a multidisciplinary environment that encompasses the Department of Community Health Sciences, the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, the broader University, and Alberta Health Services.


As a faculty member this position includes 60% time for research complemented by contributions in education, mentorship, and administrative service / leadership. As per University standards, promotion is contingent on publications, funding and research excellence. This position is integrated with Alberta Health Services, and will be located and supported within Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone. Teaching duties within the Department of Community Health Sciences will include graduate-level courses in the field of healthcare epidemiology.
