University Lecturer (Honorary Consultant) in Palliative Care


Applications are invited to an exciting new opportunity to take up a senior clinical medical academic appointment to lead medical student teaching and research in Palliative and End of Life Care at the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine. The post is based in the Primary Care Unit.


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Lead medical student Palliative and End of Life Care teaching in the School of Clinical Medicine (40%)

  • Lead a personal programme of Palliative and End of Life Care research, including postgraduate teaching of clinical and academic colleagues (40%)

  • Contribute to patient care in their clinical speciality (20%)

  • Be an Elected Fellow and Director of Studies in Clinical Medicine at St Edmunds College


Essential skills, qualifications and experience

  • Clinical experience in a medical speciality relevant to Palliative and End of Life Care

  • Higher degree (PhD, MD or equivalent)

  • Experience and creativity to lead and develop medical student Palliative and End of Life Care teaching

  • Record of research publications and research grant income generation

  • Ability to establish a significant teaching and research presence in the university

  • Ability to work collaboratively on health research programmes by contributing Palliative Care and methodological expertise

  • Ability to contribute to post-graduate teaching of Masters and Doctoral students

  • Ability to contribute to the direction and management of the Primary Care Unit

  • Excellent interpersonal, team-working and communication skills

  • Experience of academic leadership commensurate with holding the post of Speciality Director for Palliative Care in the School of Clinical Medicine

  • Commitment to professional and personal development

  • Commitment to the aims of the Primary Care Unit and of the Department of Public Health & Primary Care

  • Academic synergy with existing strengths within the Primary Care Unit and the Department of Public Health & Primary Care

  • Full Registration and Licence to Practice with GMC


This appointment requires an Honorary Clinical Contract.
