Research Assistant, Proteomics (Fixed Term) University of Cambridge, Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute United Kingdom

Research Assistant, Proteomics (Fixed Term)

Europe's top cancer charity, Cancer Research UK, has combined with the University of Cambridge to fund the world class Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, situated on the Addenbrooke's Biomedical Campus in Cambridge.

As part of the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, the Institute's research ranges from basic cancer biology through translational cancer research to clinical application. The Institute currently houses over 400 researchers and support staff with over 20 research groups and associated core facilities in a state-of-the-art research facility.

The Cambridge Institute Proteomics Core (CIPC) provides proteomic expertise including in-depth protein analysis (identification and quantification) of complex samples in addition to targeted (MRM) protein assays to Cambridge Institute scientists. We also offer protein analysis services to other departments within the University of Cambridge.

We are recruiting to expand our core mass spectrometry capabilities and require a skilled, experienced scientist to join our team in providing excellent proteomic support to research groups within the institute. Together with other team members the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • The calibration, maintenance and operation of the latest Thermo Scientific Orbitrap instruments (QExactive, QExactive HF and Fusion Lumos Orbitrap mass spectrometers) and associated nanoLC systems.

  • All aspects of sample preparation for MS analysis.

  • The running and analysis of targeted MRM assays together with senior lab members.

  • Analysis of datasets and communication of the results to facility users.

  • Comparing and assessing publicly available open-source proteomic software.

  • Data management.

You will have the opportunity to work under your own initiative and apply your excellent problem solving skills to troubleshoot challenging technical issues. You will be continually exposed to a diversity of new protocols and techniques and the latest in cutting edge mass spectrometry technology. You will be able to interact and advise our users and apply your proteomics expertise, both within the team and within the institute and encouraged to attend relevant training courses to further your career in proteomics. We are primarily a research-service lab, but you will support technical development projects to benefit the CIPC and the Institute.

Applicants will have a BSc or Msc in analytical chemistry/biochemistry or one of the life sciences and practical experience of working in a proteomics or protein chemistry laboratory either in an academic or industrial setting. Ideally you will have experience in the running and maintenance of Orbitrap mass spectrometers or similar high end MS instrumentation as well as experience in the analysis of proteomic data using software such as Proteome Discover and MaxQuant.

Desirable experience in isobaric labelling techniques and targeted MRM assays for quantification would be a distinct advantage as would candidates with familiarity/expertise in R, python or similar languages. You will be highly organised, computer-literate with excellent reporting and communication skills. You will have a flexible and cooperative approach to working and be able to demonstrate broad practical proteomics and biology skills.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 years in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a security check.
