The University of Nottingham in partnership with Health Education England East Midlands and NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands is offering a single Clinical Academic PhD studentship in applied healthcare. 

  • PhD’s must align with the HEE Mandate and the NIHR Remit for Training Programme Awards https://www.nihr.ac.uk/funding-and-support/documents/Fellowships/Academy-NIHR-Remit-For-Personal-Awards.pdf 

  • PhDs must demonstrate how they will add value to NHS provider organisations.

 

Applicants must work with a NHS Trust or a provider of health and/or care services that is providing at least 50% of its services free at the point of delivery based in the East Midlands or East of England and have completed the ICA HEE Bronze or Silver Scholar Award / an HEE/NIHR Bridging Scheme or an NIHR funded MRes or MARM. This Trust must provide a letter indicating support for the student. 

 

Successful applicants will be registered and based in The Division of Rehabilitation and Ageing in the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham. 

 

Supervisory teams (minimum of 2 academics) should be identified by applicants prior to submission. Funding

Each studentship comes with a yearly stipend at current RCUK rates (£14,999) plus Home/EU tuition fees (£4,324). Full time (3 years) or part time study (up to 6 years, pro rata funding) is possible. Applicants would also be encouraged to maintain clinical activity.

 

Minimal research costs to a maximum of £10,000 are available to cover data collection expenses. Please be mindful of this when outlining your proposed work, or explain how research costs would be covered and by whom.

 

Applying for the PhDs

  • Applicants should have a 2.1 or higher Honours degree in a relevant discipline, a good knowledge of healthcare and an interest in applied, healthcare improvement research; 

  • Applicants with a Masters degree are especially welcomed to apply; 

  • Home/EU candidates only due to funding restrictions;

  • Available from July  2019 for three years (full time study) or up to six years (if part time study).

  • A personal statement (maximum 1000 words) demonstrating how your experience to date prepares you to undertake PhD level research; 

  • A research proposal (maximum of 2000 words) that explicitly addresses the work you would carry out, detailing how it is linked to the HEE and NIHR Remit and how the research will add value to the NHS. Detail of additional research costs and how these would be met. 

  • Names and contact details of proposed supervisors should also be included; 

  • A current CV (2 pages maximum);

  • 2 full references – not contact details (references can be sent separately, directly to Patricia.Dziunka@nottingham.ac.uk, if wished);

  • PDF Copies of your degree certificates and transcripts, and if appropriate, professional registration details;

  • Evidence of English Language proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any element, or equivalent) if your first language is not English;
