The Division of Medical Education ( in the UC San Diego School of Medicine seeks an experienced and innovative individual to serve as Associate Dean for Admissions & Student Affairs (ASA). The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring excellence in all aspects of the UCSD medical student experience with major responsibility for the admission and stewardship of students throughout their four years of medical school.


The Associate Dean is a member of the Medical Education leadership team and has broad programmatic oversight for its’ student services units: Admissions & Registrar, Financial Aid, Student Life, and Diversity and Community Partnerships, as well as its’ six academic communities. The School of Medicine has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of diversity and professionalism and seeks an individual who shares that commitment.


The candidate must have an MD or other terminal degree (e.g., DO, PhD or EDD) and have a significant record of leadership and achievement in an area of medicine and/or education. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal communication and collaboration skills, in order to effectively serve as part of the Medical Education leadership team. Prior administrative experience in a medical education setting is highly desirable.


This is a 100% time position; the successful candidate will be expected to expend 15% effort in related clinical or research work.


Summary of Duties:


• Ensures excellence in all aspects of the UCSD medical student experience from admission throughout their four years of medical school
• Serves as a member of the Medical Education leadership team and works in collaboration with ASA counterparts within the UC system and other external constituencies 
• Has broad programmatic oversight responsibility for Medical Education’s student services units: Admissions & Registrar, Financial Aid Student Life, and Diversity and Community Partnerships, as well as its’ six academic communities. Provides programmatic guidance and assistance to the academic and staff managers of these units: Assistant Dean for Diversity and Community Partnerships, Director of Admissions, Director of Financial Aid and Manager, Student Life and Diversity Programs
• Oversees the division’s six academic communities. Responsible for the recruitment, training and supervision of the Academic Community Directors (ACDs) who integrate mentoring, service learning, career advice and special community programming for all medical students in their designated communities.



• Programs and activities of the Admissions, Registrar and Financial Aid units, including focused oversight of the school’s highly competitive admissions process, fellowships & grants for students, selection of students for special scholarships, student enrollment, degree verification, etc.
• Student Life Programs - Advising programs for faculty, community directors, and MSIV mentors), student advising in all areas, student council/representatives, Gold Humanism Honor Society, Healthy Student Program, etc.
• Student Life Events - Commencement, Student Awards Ceremony, Student Orientations, ”Second look” event for prospective students, Faculty-student socials
• Diversity & Community Partnerships - Diversity training for students, PRIMEHEq program, conditional acceptance program (CAP) and outreach activities



• Actively participates in and meaningfully contribute to appropriate School of Medicine policy and planning committees and meetings.
• Facilitates the Recruitment and Admissions Committee (RAC) and Student Affairs Committee (SAC)
• Serves as an ex-officio member of: Committee on Educational Policy (CEP) and Standing and Promotions Committee (SPC)
• Attends meetings for/of the: Integrated Scientific Curriculum (ISC), preclinical and clinical course and clerkship directors, summer research selection, School of Medicine parking task force, and school and division leadership meetings on education
• Serves as an institutional member of the American Association of Medical Colleges Group on Student Affairs, attending national and regional meetings

• Student Research - Administration of summer programs, Coordination of outside Fellowships
• Data Tracking & Reporting – Graduate Questionnaire (GQ) and other data for AAMC. LCME, UCOP, etc.
• Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) - “SOAP” and match day events, residency match statistics
• Reports, Publications and Website - Oversees annual updates to relevant portions of Advisor and Student Handbook, Financial Aid and Admissions informational items
• Duties shared duties with Associate Dean, UGME - Academic advising, Residency selection & match process, Careers in Medicine program.


The appropriate series and appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of California pay scales. Appointments may require candidates to be self-funded.
