The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of a part-time (35 %)



The field of the position is Obstetrics and Gynecology.


The professorship in Obstetrics and Gynecology is connected to the position of head of department at HUS Helsinki University Hospital. The professorship and the position of head of department at HUS Helsinki University Hospital are filled through a simultaneous open application process. A separate application must be submitted for the position of head of department at HUS in accordance with the HUS Helsinki University Hospital’s instructions.


The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.


An appointee to the position of assistant professor in the tenure track system shall hold a
doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means.
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.


An appointee to the position of professor shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications for the position of professor, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills.
To ensure that ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, the appointee to the position of professor must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation.


The duties of the field include not only undergraduate education, but also the provision of training to specialising physicians in the clinical skills of obstetrics and gynaecology as well as, where applicable, in the specialties of the field. Further duties include the development of clinical operations and research related to the field.
The professor’s duties also include carrying out and supervising scientific research, following developments in research and participating in societal interaction as well as national and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the professor’s duties include other tasks assigned to the unit.


Practical experience can be demonstrated with a specialist degree or license in the field.


The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

Should the appointment procedure be terminated at HUS or should the proposals of the appointment committees of the Faculty of Medicine and HUS differ from each other, the appointment procedure for the professorship at the Faculty of Medicine will be terminated.


If the appointee to the professorship resigns from the position of head of department at HUS, his or her employment contract with the University of Helsinki will also be terminated. The appointment to the position of head of department is valid indefinitely, not exceeding the duration of employment in the professorship at the University of Helsinki.
