The University of California, Berkeley seeks applicants for a tenure track (Assistant Professor) position in the area of “Emerging Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Resistance,” with a potential start date of July 1, 2021. The successful candidate will be invited to join the Division of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology in the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, which is unique in its tradition of multidisciplinary “wet-lab” research.

We aim to recruit an Assistant Professor engaged in research focused on pressing and emerging global infectious disease problems. Population growth, migration, urbanization, urban informal human settlements, homelessness, intensive animal food production and globalization of food trade, widening socioeconomic disparity, new technology, international travel and trade, encroachment on natural habitats, and climate change have resulted in the emergence of pandemic-prone pathogens (e.g., SARS-CoV-2, MERS, Ebola, Zika). Antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacterial infections have reversed the previous 20-year increase in life expectancy. The World Health Organization recently cautioned against the threat of “severe emerging diseases with the potential to generate a public health emergency, and for which no, or insufficient, preventive and curative solutions exist”. A perfect example is the COVID-19 pandemic, which has transformed our existence. We seek an investigator conducting cutting-edge research on population-based infectious disease problems that arise from the vast array of global changes described above. Specifically, we propose to recruit an Assistant Professor combining biologic, clinical, epidemiologic, and computational approaches to find novel solutions to emerging infectious diseases associated with global change and that are of worldwide importance, with the overall goal to accelerate the discovery of new diagnostics and therapeutics, including new antibiotics and vaccines, and translate molecular discovery to population-level interventions to prevent emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.

We propose a broad search to attract as diverse a pool possible with wide-ranging interdisciplinary expertise including but not limited to:

• interaction of the host, immune responses, environment, and vector in the transmission of epidemic-prone diseases;
• pathogen “spill-over” from zoonotic reservoirs into human populations;
• pathogen phylogenetics, phylogeography, and transmission dynamics;
• novel vaccines, therapies, and diagnostics against pandemic-prone and AMR pathogens for use in low and middle-income countries;
• biology-based elimination and prevention of the spread of AMR genes of bacterial pathogens in human and animal populations;
• the interaction of chronic non-communicable diseases and conditions with infectious diseases.

The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of expertise and consistent with the needs of the Division (e.g., public health microbiology, immunology). The most competitive candidates would maintain a research program with deep linkages to international collaborative sites and involve epidemiologic approaches to analyze the health impacts of infectious diseases on the most vulnerable populations.

Basic qualifications:

-Ph.D., MD, or equivalent international degree at the time of application

Additional qualifications:

-Minimum of one year of postdoctoral research experience or equivalent at the time of start date

Preferred qualifications:

-Ph.D., MD or equivalent international degree in the Biological Sciences, Epidemiology or a related field, with a strong laboratory component
-International or domestic fieldwork/collaborations
-We are particularly interested in scholars with a commitment and track record of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the realms of research, teaching, and/or service.
-Successful applicants are expected to develop a nationally recognized laboratory-based program addressing public health problems and to collaborate across disciplines to develop research initiatives.
-Candidates should demonstrate evidence of strong research productivity, the potential for securing extramural funding, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs
