About the Position

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the position of:

Assistant Professor / Associate Professor / Professor of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia
(in Finnish: eläinlääketieteellinen anestesia ja kivunhoito / in Swedish: veterinäranestesi och smärtvård)

The appointee will work in the Department of Equine and Small Animal Medicine, with responsibilities in teaching, research, clinical services, and continuing education in veterinary anaesthesiology. This includes perioperative care, pain alleviation, intensive care, and emergency care in companion, production, and experimental animals.

The appointment may be at the level of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor depending on the candidate’s qualifications and career stage. The tenure track system aims to grant tenure and a permanent professorship.


Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary students in anaesthesiology.

  • Contributing to clinical service in anaesthesiology, perioperative, and critical care.

  • Leading and developing research in veterinary anaesthesiology.

  • Supervising doctoral students and postgraduates.

  • Contributing to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s development and, where applicable, leadership/management tasks.

  • Advancing veterinary anaesthesiology nationally and internationally.


Qualifications

Essential requirements:

  • DVM or equivalent degree, and EU veterinary license.

  • PhD in Veterinary Medicine (to be completed by the application deadline).

  • Teaching and research experience in veterinary anaesthesiology.

  • Clinical experience in anaesthesiology.

  • Good cooperation and communication skills.

  • Fluency in English.

Merits:

  • Specialist degree in veterinary anaesthesiology (Diplomate of ECVAA or ACVA) or related clinical specialty.

  • Documented ability to obtain competitive research funding.

  • Experience in international collaboration.

  • Ability to supervise PhD students.

  • Finnish or Swedish proficiency (or willingness to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time).

Career stage criteria:

  • Assistant/Associate Professor: PhD, ability to conduct independent research, teaching competence, motivation for academic career.

  • Professor: Top-level scholarly qualifications, strong research funding record, leadership skills, supervision experience, international research collaboration, ability to provide high-level research-based teaching.


Salary & Benefits

  • Annual gross salary:

    • Assistant/Associate Professor: approx. €57,000–74,000

    • Professor: approx. €70,000–90,000
