The Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) at the University of Washington School of Medicine invites applications for a laboratory animal veterinarian and scientist in a full-time position as Assistant Professor without tenure due to source of funding. This is a 12-month service period (July – June) position with an anticipated start date of June 1, 2020.  Responsibilities of this position will involve research (50%), and veterinary medical, regulatory, surgical, and teaching/scholarly activities (50%).  Participation in clinical care of all laboratory animal species, with weekend and holiday work is required. Responsibility for mentoring of veterinary residents in regulatory medicine is required.


Candidate will oversee, guide and teach veterinary technicians and laboratory animal residents in the clinical, regulatory, and surgical care of a wide variety of laboratory animal species in both informal and didactic settings. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. A successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent research program including preparation of independent and collaborative grants and manuscripts, and teaching and mentoring of graduate students and fellows.


The DCM has a faculty of 45 primary, clinical, and affiliate veterinarians and scientists who have diverse training and expertise in laboratory animal biology and medicine, veterinary pathology, surgery, internal medicine, and aquatics. DCM faculty research interests are broad and include specific expertise in hematologic cancer, developmental immunology, inflammatory lung disease, innate immunity, inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer, comparative pathology, nutrition/metabolism, embryonic stem cell biology, and aging.  Additional information about the Department can be found at the following website: https://www.washington.edu/compmed/


Qualifications

Applicants must have a DVM/VMD from an AVMA accredited institution and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States.  Candidate must have experience in laboratory animal medicine and board certification or eligibility in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine is strongly preferred.  A PhD or foreign equivalent preferred but not required or other advanced research training. Candidate must have demonstrated research knowledge and experience as shown by having past and current relevant research publications independent and/or collaborative grants relating to the area. Candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Candidate must have experience as a laboratory animal veterinarian.
