The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for several Assistant Professor positions in the tenure track. Expertise is required in the specific area of computer sciences, statistics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, cellular and molecular biology, neurology, medicine, or a closely related discipline in biomedical research. The applicant should demonstrate excellence in research and education and a strong record of collaboration. The successful applicant must have a clear record of productivity and creativity during their post-doctoral training, and high likelihood of developing an independent, cutting edge program in the area of computational diagnostics and biomarker discovery.

Expertise is also required in the specific area of computational diagnostics and prognostics, risk modeling, and biomarker discovery using genetic and multi-omic data such as high-dimensional flow cytometry, single-cell transcriptomic and epigenomic assays, histology imaging and other high-throughput screening assays. Applicants must have an M.D and/or Ph.D or equivalent degree.

Teaching responsibilities may include participating in medical school basic science education as well as graduate training through affiliation with one or more of the inter-departmental, interdisciplinary graduate groups of the Biomedical Graduate Studies (BGS) program.

Clinical responsibilities may include providing essential contributions to the clinical programs of the department, including substantial teaching and/or independent contributions to clinical research programs. Publications may derive from clinical observations or from participation in studies. Both non-clinicians and clinicians are invited to apply.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include developing an independent research program, synergistic with the scientific interests of one or more divisions, research centers, and core laboratories in the department. The ideal candidate will collaborate with or contribute to data-driven research initiatives within the department including the Penn Precision Medicine Center, Center for Personalized Diagnostics, and Penn Neurodegeneration Genomics Center, and other computational/data-driven research institutes and centers in the Perelman School of Medicine.

We seek candidates with strong background in developing, testing, and analyzing high throughput omic assays and screening technologies for applications in diagnostics, prognostics, and risk modeling.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory has a strong tradition in basic, translational, and clinical research. The department's physicians and scientists have developed many recent diagnostic tests through the use of cellular, genetic, and molecular technology. Research areas of interests include bioinformatics, biomarker discovery, cancer biology, cardiovascular pathobiology, developmental, stem cell, and regenerative biology, diabetes, experimental therapeutics, gene therapy and vaccines, genetics, gene regulation and genetic-related diseases, fundamental immunology, hematology, HIV, microbiology and infectious diseases, metabolic regulation, neuropathology and neurodegenerative disorders, proteomics, and orphan diseases.

The selected candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with other researchers within the department, the School of Medicine, and the University Health System and have access to unique data resources. The Penn Medicine Biobank hosts blood and tissue samples of more than 50,000 patients with comprehensive electronic health records and genetic data (whole exome sequencing will be complete in 5 years). The department manages large clinical data from its diagnostic and laboratory services such as the Center for Personalized Diagnostics, the flow cytometry core, and the digital pathology repository. The department hosts several national initiatives, including the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies as a member of the NIH Cancer Moonshot Initiative, and the Penn Neurodegeneration Genomics Center which coordinates the Alzheimer’s Disease Sequencing Project that will generate complete genomes of more than 30,000 participants.
