Position Overview

Sinai Health System and the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, University of Toronto, are seeking to recruit a full-time Clinician Investigator in Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery at the rank of Assistant Professor. The effective start date is September 1, 2026, or as mutually agreed upon.

This position is ideally suited to an early- to mid-career Otolaryngologist–Head & Neck Surgeon with a strong academic interest in Public Health, Head & Neck Oncology, and Reconstructive Surgery. The role requires a significant commitment to research, particularly in Public Health, and involves cross-appointment at Princess Margaret Hospital / University Health Network (UHN) to support multidisciplinary Head & Neck Cancer care.


Clinical Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide comprehensive clinical care in Head & Neck Oncology, including surgical management of complex malignant and benign tumors.
  • Perform advanced Head & Neck Reconstruction, using local, regional, and microvascular techniques to optimize functional and aesthetic outcomes.
  • Manage Endocrine Surgery cases relevant to Otolaryngology, including thyroid and parathyroid procedures.
  • Participate fully in the departmental on-call rotation.
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team alongside surgical, medical, and radiation oncology partners at Princess Margaret Hospital and UHN to deliver coordinated care.

Academic and Research Responsibilities

The primary academic focus is in Public Health, with emphasis on developing and sustaining an independent, extramurally funded research program. Responsibilities include:

  • Securing research grants, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at national and international scientific meetings.
  • Preference for candidates with a Master’s degree (MPH, MSc in Health Policy, Clinical Epidemiology, or equivalent). Candidates without a master’s must demonstrate commitment and a plan to obtain one within three years.
  • Teaching and mentoring residents, fellows, and medical students within the Department and University of Toronto.
  • Securing an academic appointment at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health within five years.

Research Focus Areas Include:

  • Public health challenges in head and neck cancer: health equity, access to care, systemic disparities, and quality of care.
  • Cancer prevention and screening, including HPV-related, tobacco-, and alcohol-associated cancers.
  • Survivorship and quality of life studies: patient-reported outcomes, functional abilities (swallowing, speech), and mental health.
  • Health services and policy research: efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and organization of multidisciplinary head and neck cancer care.

Qualifications

  • MD or equivalent degree.
  • Completed residency training in Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery.
  • Fellowship training in Head & Neck Oncology and Reconstruction.
  • Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
  • Certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery or equivalent.
  • Strong research interest and experience, preferably in Public Health.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Estimated Remuneration: $350,000 – $500,000 per annum, commensurate with academic rank, qualifications, and experience.
