Summary Description

The neonatology follow-up program psychologist will be responsible for the developmental assessments for children ages 6 to 30 months, in addition to the assessments for autism and other behavioral issues. The psychologist will be primarily responsible for children 18 to 30 months, and this will include conducting detailed neuro- developmental evaluations with toddlers born extremely premature or with a variety of medical conditions (Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, seizures, strokes or parenchymal hemorrhage, meningitis and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy requiring head/whole body cooling) or those who received medical interventions such as tracheostomies and ECMO support. Neurodevelopmental evaluations include administration of the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development and screening for autism. For those toddlers who demonstrates signs of an autistic spectrum disorder our psychologist will perform a formal assessment. The psychologist also will work closely with the neonatologists in clinic to manage behavioral problems in our patient population. The psychologist will also be involved in screening mothers for post-partum depression. For both the NICU Follow-Up and the research studies, the psychologist produces a written report outlining the results and providing referrals to additional testing or remedial services and recommendations for parents, teachers and other services providers.

The psychologist will conduct extensive neuropsychological testing in a variety of research protocols within the department of pediatrics and obstetrics. These studies include assessments for cognitive, language; motor and adaptive functioning in children aged 3 to 11 years old and include but are not limited to the following scales: WPPSI-IV, WISC, Vineland-3 Adaptive Scales, Preschool Language Scales, Visual Motor Integrations Scale, Peabody Picture Vocabulary, and the Differential Abilities Scale-II.
