Assistant Research Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology
Indiana University, School of Medicine
United States

Position Summary

We are seeking an outstanding scientist to join a collaborative team responsible for creating and validating a rodent hippocampal brain slice model for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and ischemia. Our research focuses on the characterizing this brain slice model and investigating neuroprotective effects against ischemia and trauma of clinical drug combination. This model is a novel platform for studying drug efficacy in treating acute brain injury and ischemic damage. It holds promise for better understanding the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of ischemia and developing novel neuroprotective therapeutics that leads to treatments and prevention for stroke and traumatic brain injury patients.

The successful candidates will have extensive experience with in vitro brain slice models and blood-brain barrier (BBB) research with a well-established publication record in the BBB research, and applying molecular and cell biology approaches to elucidate drug mechanism of action in models of hypoxia, inflammation, apoptosis, and oxidative stress. The candidate should be proficient in transcardial perfusion, blood-brain barrier/hippocampus isolation in rodents, brain slice chamber system operation, as well as tissue preparation for pathology examination. The candidate for this position will design, develop and optimize novel assays, identify targets and pathways to study hypoxic status in brain slices, and support the development of therapeutics to treat and prevent stroke and TBI related diseases. The ideal candidate will exhibit not only robust scientific proficiency, but equally strong teamwork, organizational and communication skills. Experience with pharmacological intervention in BBB models, advanced imaging/microscopy techniques, immunohistochemistry and CRISPR/Cas9 is strongly preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Characterize brain slice model and test efficacy of this model for use of drug treatment exploration
  • Develop and optimize novel cell-based assays to support therapeutic development
  • Development and execution of biochemical and cell-based assays to assess drug mechanism of action and measure drug activity and potency
  • Apply scientific knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot and refine methods and assays
  • Effectively communicate results and project status to senior research team members
  • Thoroughly document all research activities in an electronic laboratory notebook
  • Write experimental protocols and follow established protocols and SOPs
  • Supervise one or more scientific researchers or students
  • Train other researchers in creating blood-brain barrier model, or CRISPR/Cas9 genetic screens
  • Assist in collecting and processing samples and writing pathology reports for local brain bank
  • Write and report research progress & development, and publish novel research findings
  • Write and submit research grants
  • Assist as needed with the teaching of a Neuroscience and Behavior course

Indiana University is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community and strongly encourages applications from women and underrepresented minorities.

Basic Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Neuroscience or related discipline with 10+ years of research experience related to of BBB models preferred
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and time management skills
  • Ability to complete tasks independently in pursuit of team-wide research aims
  • Strong base of knowledge and experience in Cell and Molecular Biology, Pharmacology/Toxicology, and Neuroscience techniques
  • Experience with experimental design and data analysis/statistics; imaging and confocal microscopy, immunohistochemistry, CRISPR/Cas9 techniques are a plus
