Description: St. Michael’s Hospital Departments of Critical Care and of Surgery are seeking a surgeon/critical care physician to fulfill the appointment as clinician investigator, scientist, or clinician quality improver. The successful candidate must be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant/Associate or Full Professor in Department of Surgery, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date will be January 1, or July 1, 2024, or one which is mutually agreed upon. The successful candidate would contribute to clinical excellence in neurotrauma critical care as well as neurotrauma surgery. The preferred candidate would have a demonstrated research program or quality improvement in neurotrauma. A record of accomplishment of excellence in post-graduate surgery and critical care teaching would be an asset or academic quality improvement. Finally, a commitment to patient- and family-centred care, promoting a culture of collegiality and professionalism, and functioning in a collaborative multi-professional team environment is important. Clinical activity would be balanced between both critical care and a surgical practice that emphasizes trauma and urgent care.
St. Michael’s Hospital is part of Unity Health Network that also includes Providence Healthcare and St. Joseph’s Health Centre. It is an acute care academic health science centre fully affiliated with the University of Toronto with clinical priorities that include the disadvantaged, local community and the critically ill. It provides specialized health-system care in trauma, neurosurgery, cardiology and cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, oncology, renal support, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, hemophilia, psychiatry and many other clinical services. It has over 70 adult critical care beds with advanced practices in mechanical ventilation, structural heart disease and neuro- and trauma critical care among others.
The successful candidate must have a medical degree, postgraduate fellowship training, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in surgery and critical care (or equivalent) and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Compensation for clinical activities will depend on the amount of clinical work performed and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and within the usual range for an intensivist in the Province of Ontario. Additional income may be possible from clinical activity outside the critical care department.
