Sunnybrook is a tertiary care hospital in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area, with approximately 1.2 million patient visits annually, including 64,000 Emergency Department visits. It serves as a regional referral centre for burns, stroke, cancer, interventional cardiology, neurosurgery, vascular and spinal surgery, and high-risk maternal and neonatal care. Sunnybrook is the base hospital for Toronto EMS, Canada’s largest trauma centre, and the first hospital in Canada accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Trauma Centre. Academic Affiliation and TeachingSunnybrook is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and serves as a core training site for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program, as well as multiple postgraduate and fellowship programs. Faculty members are established leaders in medical education. The department is a lead site for POCUS training, and its simulation program provides teaching and continuing professional development in a high-fidelity, interprofessional, team-based environment.
