Sunnybrook is a tertiary care hospital in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area with 1.2 million patient visits annually including 64,000 ED visits. It serves as a regional referral centre for diverse specialties, including burns, stroke, cancer, interventional cardiology, neurosurgery, vascular, spinal surgery, and high-risk maternal/neonatal care. It functions as the base hospital for Toronto EMS and is Canada’s largest trauma centre and the first hospital in Canada to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Trauma Centre. Sunnybrook is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and serves as a core training site for Emergency Medicine residency and fellowship programs. The site is a lead contributor to residency Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training, and its simulation program supports high-fidelity, interprofessional education and continuing professional development.
