Position Description

The Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) is seeking applications for the position of Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the rank of Instructor, Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Reporting to and responsible for serving the Dean of HSDM, the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs oversees the day-to-day clinical operations and patient care services for both the Harvard Dental Center Longwood (HDC-L) and Cambridge (HDC-C) campuses. The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs will oversee all clinical functions, including business operations/finance, quality control and compliance, environmental health/safety, infection control, patient care and records management for both the faculty and teaching practices of two locations. The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs is expected to have a preclinical, clinical or didactic teaching role, consistent with his/her area of expertise.

HDC-C opened in February 2021 and presents the Associate Dean with an exciting opportunity to shape the strategic direction of this new venture. HDC-L houses the main educational dental facility where treatment is provided by pre-doctoral and advanced-graduate dental students. Additionally, the Faculty Group Practices at both campuses provide multi-specialty comprehensive dental care. The combined operations of both sites (Longwood and Cambridge) include: more than 200 predoctoral and advanced graduate students, 30 Faculty Providers, and over 50 staff which includes four Administrative Directors.

The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs works closely with HSDM leadership, the Office of Dental Education, Department Chairs throughout HSDM, postgraduate Program Directors, and members of the clinical faculty and staff in developing and executing a successful business plan and governance structure to ensure both effective educational and business operations and quality control/regulatory compliance in an environment supportive of the school’s educational programs and HSDM’s Mission Statement.

Basic Qualifications

Must possess a DMD or DDS degree from a CODA accredited dental school and be eligible for full dental licensure in Massachusetts. Minimum of 8 years of leadership experience in a dental and/or healthcare environment, including experience managing a team.

Additional Qualifications

Clinical practice and/or private practice management experience is preferred. Familiarity with quality and process improvement methodology in a clinical environment. Working knowledge of federal and state regulations that impact clinical operations. Proven problem-solving and ability to analyze and use data for decision-making. Ability to build and maintain effective teams. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work flexible and extended hours and travel between clinical sites as needed.
