The University seeks to appoint an associate professor to the Department of Experimental Medicine (AEM) to be a part of the department’s research and development activities as well as contributing to the department’s teaching and training programmes.

The position is 37 h/week with commencement on 1 December 2020 or as soon as possible after this date.

AEM is responsible for the centralized Copenhagen Animal Care and Use Programme (the Programme) at the University and University Hospitals, which is accredited by AAALAC. We aim to provide the best possible conditions and services for advanced research using laboratory animals in the most lenient way.

Job description

Biomedical research is constantly developing new demands for expert assistance from AEM, which creates a stimulating and challenging work environment. The position as associate professor is anchored in the department’s Section for Research and Education, and will contribute to maintenance and development of the high quality of the Programme. We expect that you can work across the organization and actively engage and contribute in the multifaceted tasks in the Programme.

The associate professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination, among this assistance in the supervision and guidance of PhD and Master students
  • Participation in the planning, design, data collection, statistical analyses and manuscript writing related to the various research and development projects conducted at the department, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Directing and organizing the department’s pre-clinical services
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications

Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • A PhD degree or similar research education in laboratory animal science or comparative medicine
  • Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways
  • At least five years of experience with independent academic research as well as project management, particularly in the field of welfare assessment of laboratory rodents
  • Demonstrated interest and skills in experimental design and critical assessment of biomedical research
  • Experience from participation in multidisciplinary projects
  • Teaching qualifications and pedagogical competencies
  • Research-based teaching

Personal profile:

  • Good collaborative skills, and the ability to create strong collaborative relations within your own team, with the other units of AEM, and with other the researchers at the university
  • Good communication skills. Can communicate effectively with own team, colleagues, researchers, and relevant authorities.
  • Good skills in experimental design and statistical analysis
  • Analytical, structured, flexible and productive

Terms of employment

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the appointments committee.  All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to make an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself. The Department of Experimental Medicine is a service department responsible for the University’s and National Hospital's centalises animal care and use programme and provides laboratory animal assistance and counseling regarding animal experimental work at the Faculty of Health Sciences and National Hospital. In addition, we perform research in animal welfare and have extensive course activities, where we train researchers, students and technical staff in laboratory animal science. The laboratory animal facilities at the University of Copenhagen are expanding - with the largest unit in the Panum building, as well as units in Frederiksberg, in the "Biocenter" building, in the August Krogh building and at the National Hospital.
