Position Description

The Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (FMIGS) at Emory University provides postgraduate obstetrician–gynecologists with the opportunity to gain advanced surgical expertise while working alongside the department’s team of highly skilled minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons.

The Division of Gynecologic Specialties performs a broad spectrum of minimally invasive procedures, including:

  • Laparoscopic surgery

  • Vaginal surgery

  • Hysteroscopic procedures

  • Robotic-assisted surgery

Fellows hold a junior faculty appointment within the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and are expected to contribute to teaching, research, and clinical service according to their training and career goals.

The primary clinical role is active participation in all clinical activities performed by FMIGS core faculty. Fellows may engage in clinical and/or translational research opportunities within the Department, and research participation is required.


Effort Distribution & Expectations

Scholarly Activities (20–25%)

In alignment with School of Medicine guidelines for appointment, promotion, and tenure, fellows are expected to engage in scholarship, including:

  • An independent research project (required)

  • Manuscript authorship

  • Research study involvement

  • Abstract submissions

  • Presentations

  • Other scholarly activities (including professional blogs)


Teaching (1–25%)

Teaching responsibilities may include:

  • Occasional lectures for residents or medical students

  • Participation in teaching conferences, Grand Rounds, Morbidity & Mortality Conference, and Division meetings

  • Teaching rounds

  • Precepting medical students

  • Participation in resident and fellow interviews


Clinical Service (>75%)

Fellows will primarily devote their effort to clinical service and advanced surgical training, including:

  • Managing complex surgical cases

  • Providing inpatient and outpatient clinical services

  • Participating in weekend and holiday call rotation

  • Delivering care at Emory University Hospitals, Clinics, and affiliated sites

Additional clinical expectations:

  • Supervising medical students, residents, and mid-level providers when serving as attending

  • Delivering high-quality patient care and supporting growth of services for complex benign gynecologic conditions

  • Completing required documentation (time records, dictation, encounter forms, medical records) in a timely manner

Note: Responsibilities may change at the discretion of the Fellowship Program Director or Department Chair.

  • Day-to-day supervision by: Dr. Marie Shockley, Fellowship Program Director


On-Site Requirement

All duties must be performed in person at Emory University locations. Remote work is not permitted. Emory may adjust this requirement with notice.
