Description:

The Departments of Surgery at Sinai Health System (SHS) and the University of Toronto are currently accepting applications for the position of Surgeon-in-Chief at Sinai Health System. The position is for a 5-year term, renewable once based upon a successful review. As a fully affiliated academic hospital of the University of Toronto, we are looking for an experienced and forward-thinking leader who can effectively develop and execute a strategic vision, foster team building, and cultivate fruitful partnerships. The effective date of this appointment is January 1, 2024, or shortly thereafter. 

 

The Sinai Health Surgeon in Chief (SIC) will hold the Leadership Sinai Chair in Surgery. They will be responsible for the clinical, academic and program/operational management of the Surgical Programs of the Hospital. They will work with medical leaders in the Surgical Programs of SHS and the University of Toronto to develop and implement strategic planning, aligned with the Hospital and University, to achieve outstanding clinical, educational and academic success in our areas of focus. In collaboration with surgical leaders (Department Chiefs and Division Heads) at SHS, they will lead in recruiting and mentoring surgical staff to fulfill these objectives. In partnership with the Senior Clinical Director, Surgery and Oncology Program, they will lead the operations of the program to optimize operational performance and ensure high quality, safe care. They will work with the SHS Foundation to develop and manage philanthropic funding and manage and report on the use of funds. The SIC is expected to devote 3 days/week to the role, and to continue a clinical surgery practice.

 

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree, have or be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and hold advanced certification in a surgical discipline. They must be eligible for full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. They will be a visionary, with superior leadership qualities, strong operational management skills, and an excellent communicator, able to mentor junior faculty and foster partnerships. They will be a respected clinician, with a commitment to provision of highest quality care, interprofessional and multilevel education, and have a proven track record and/or commitment to research. They will have demonstrated ability to create and maintain a workplace and learning environment that is respectful and safe for all staff, trainees and patients. They will foster a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion within the Surgical Program, and maintain professionalism and physician wellness.

 

The SIC will report to the President & CEO, SHS and to the Chair, Department of Surgery, University of Toronto. Remuneration for the role of SIC will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

Sinai Health System, a full affiliate of the University of Toronto, provides acute care, complex and rehabilitative care, primary care, home care, and other community-based services to create an innovative and integrated continuum of care, meeting the needs of complex patients. Its Surgical Program comprises the Departments of Surgery (Divisions of Orthopedic Oncology, Orthopedics, General Surgery, and Urology), Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, Dentistry/Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), and Division of Gynaecology. Key areas of focus include Surgical Oncology, Arthroplasty, Fractures and Sports Medicine, IBD surgery, and Gynecology, Urology, Ophthalmology, and Dental/OMFS programs.

 

The surgical program areas have recently undergone renewal, and now include 19 newly renovated state-of-the-art operating rooms (with robotic and stereotaxic capability), MDRD facility, and PACU; a new ambulatory cancer care unit, new Endoscopy suite, and a new 36 bed Med/Surg Intensive Care Unit. Renovations to two surgical wards and the Emergency Room are nearing completion. Surgical volumes are 16,600 annually with plans to expand as new ORs are operationalized. There are 63 active surgeons practicing at SHS and holding University of Toronto appointments. Sinai Health System hosts full educational (undergraduate, residency, and fellowship) programs, and staff include Clinicians- Teachers , Clinician-Investigators and Clinician-Scientists, with active grants, research programs and appointments at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (LTRI) at SHS. The surgical program also has strong QI and patient safety programs, and has achieved NSQIP meritorious awards in 2021 and 2022.
