Bio-Markers in Cardiovascular Diseases: Full Time Staff Member

The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at The Biomedical Sciences Group KU Leuven has a leading position in cardiovascular research and a strong track record in translation, with a faculty that actively bridges clinical and basic research. The Department is recruiting a full-time faculty member for research on the development and validation of biomarkers as diagnostic tools and/or therapeutic targets using experimental studies to complement ongoing clinical and population-based research. The research program can build on data and samples generated from studies in ischemic cardiovascular disease, heart failure and cardio-metabolic disease, as well as several research programs using pre-clinical animal models.




  • You will develop an internationally competitive research program which creates synergy between the different existing units where you will search complementary and connection to the ongoing research within the Department.
  • You will create a bridge between data-collection, interpretation and further validation of the data.
  • You are expected to write successfully, competitive internal and external research funding.


You will participate in education in basic sciences in the academic programs in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

You will also contribute to the pedagogic project of the university through the supervision of master's theses and as a (co-)promoter of PhD students.


  • You have a PhD degree with a strong and relevant research track record in cardiovascular physiology and biology relevant to the expected research program.

  • Knowledge of systems biology and bioinformatics is an asset. International experience is a prerequisite.

  • You have demonstrable qualities for education; teaching experience is an advantage.

  • You have organizational skills, a cooperative attitude and can give leadership.

  • Proficiency in English is required. The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in administrative meetings.

    Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch, respectively English, to the required standard.


We are offering full-time employment in a tenure track position (assistant professor) in an intellectually challenging environment. The Department has state-of-the-art infrastructure and offers a supportive working environment with a balance between research and teaching tasks. KU Leuven has all facilities available to perform -omics analyses, and within and outside the Department large patient cohorts and population studiesprovide excellent opportunities for the research program.
