Biomedical Research Manager
Imperial College London, Department of Medicine
United Kingdom

Are you looking for an exciting new opportunity to use your research management skills in a world leading research environment? Are you an enthusiastic and motivated individual with the specialist expertise to maximise chances of grant funding success?

With the forthcoming Faculty reorganisation from five Departments to eight, the Faculty of Medicine is now looking to recruit three outstanding Research Managers to work within the Departments of Surgery and Cancer (1 post), Brain Sciences and Infectious Diseases (1 post) and Immunology and Metabolism (1 post). This is an exciting time to join the Faculty as the new departments are established and your skills and expertise will be invaluable in the provision of research support to staff at all levels, with a particular focus on funding applications.

The Faculty of Medicine is a world-leading centre of excellence in biomedical research, delivering innovative, cutting-edge basic and translational research benefitting patients worldwide. This large multi-disciplinary environment is home to more than 1400 academic and research staff and has research funding in excess of £170M per year.

This opportunity would ideally suit someone with a strong biomedical background who has experience in a research administration environment.

Responsibilities include identifying suitable funding opportunities, providing specialist advice on the preparation of grant applications and producing key scientific content for applications e.g. pathways to impact statements, public engagement plans, lay and technical summaries, and writing letters of support on behalf of the Department.

You will manage internal peer review for applications and organise mock interviews for shortlisted candidates to maximise chances of success. Working closely with the Departmental administration team, you will have responsibility for overseeing financial elements of applications, to include assessing and escalating requests for Departmental contribution of funds and advising the Head of Department/Departmental Manager on the feasibility of various funding streams with regard to financial requirements. You will support the career development of academic staff and early-career researchers through the provision of specialist advice and alongside the Departmental Head will play a leading role in the strategic direction of research management within the Department.

You must have a PhD in biological sciences and experience of working in a scientific research environment, ideally in an administrative capacity. You will have extensive experience of producing scientific content for a skilled audience, including experience of writing grant applications and scientific papers. Knowledge of the grant application process, and of associated principles including Full Economic Costing (FEC) and TRansparent Approach to Costing (TRAC) are required for this post. An understanding of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) process is required and the ability to produce REF impact case studies for this purpose. You will be an exceptional communicator with the ability to quickly build strong relationships with academic and research staff.

This is an exciting opportunity to take a developmental step in higher education management and directly contribute to the Faculty of Medicine mission to undertake outstanding research and translate this for patient benefit.
