Position Summary

Indiana University School of Medicine is announcing the search for a Chair of the Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology & Physiology. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a visionary leader to advance a strong academic department to the next level of excellence.

IU School of Medicine is the largest medical school in the country with more than 20,000 living alumni and 3,000 learners on nine campuses across the state. Its diverse faculty is made up of 2,700 full-time members and 3,200 volunteer faculty who are responsible for training medical, graduate and postgraduate students. IU School of Medicine is the only allopathic medical school in Indiana.

The Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology & Physiology is a recent merger of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology and the Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology to align the complementary educational missions and research foci of the previously separated departments. Education-related goals are to integrate anatomy and physiology in medical school education and broaden the scope of the anatomical sciences education-track PhD program to include physiological sciences. Research expertise includes neuroscience, renal biology, skeletal and bone biology, cardiovascular biology and disease. Expansion in neuromusculoskeletal research is a major goal for the new department. The merger also strengthens department ties with the Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health, Stark Neuroscience Research Institute, Cardiovascular Institute, and the Neuromusculoskeletal Biology Research Program at the Roudebush VA Hospital.

The Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology & Physiology has 32 primary faculty appointees and 62 learners in PhD and master’s degree programs in Indianapolis across the department. Graduate programs fit a broad range of career interests—from biomedical research to educational research and pedagogy to advanced preparation for professional school.

Basic Qualifications

This position is ideal for a collaborative and transformational leader who can build on existing strengths in Anatomy, Cell Biology & Physiology, and the visions to develop new programs. Minimum qualifications include a Doctorate or Terminal degree, an extramurally funded research program, and academic credentials for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
