Chairof Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics
University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine
United States

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics (DBEI).

Founded in 1765, the Perelman School of Medicine is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States and prides itself on leadership in biomedical research, medical education, and patient care.  Today there are 10 basic science and 18 clinical departments in the School.  The DBEI is the largest of the basic science departments, established in 1994 originally as the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology with the Informatics division added in 2017.  It serves as an international leader in the academic fields of biostatistics, epidemiology, and informatics, collaborating with biomedical researchers throughout the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB), the Department’s mission is amplified through synergistic interactions among the three divisions – each led by a division director who reports to the Chair.  DBEI fosters primary methodological research, facilitates collaborative research across broad domains, and provides training in biostatistics, epidemiology, and informatics.

DBEI impacts multiple departments, institutes, and centers in the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) and in other schools of the University of Pennsylvania through its collaboration in and support of the areas of biostatistics, epidemiology, and informatics.  The Department is recognized as a strong academic structure that enables interconnections across campus.  It has a total of 51 primary faculty across the three divisions and 50 secondary faculty whose primary appointments are largely in the clinical departments.  The Department, working closely with the CCEB, has helped to promote a culture of rigorous clinical research across Penn Medicine and has trained talented clinical investigators through the highly regarded Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology program.  Associated PhD programs have grown in stature, with the Biostatistics PhD program now considered a top tier program nationally.  The faculty are internationally recognized as leaders in their fields, showing impact through funding, publications, speaking engagements, elections, and service to prestigious academies and associations.

The Chair will provide strong vision and leadership for the Department and will lead strategic planning and implementation for the continued success of the department.  Applicants for the position of Chair must hold a PhD and/or MD degree and qualify for faculty appointment as Associate or Professor level in the Standing Faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.  Candidates should possess dynamic, inclusive leadership skills, administrative expertise, and a clear commitment to excellence in research and education, fostering an inclusive environment, and sponsorship and mentorship of a diverse cadre of students, fellows and faculty.  The applicant must have the demonstrated ability to foster strong collaboration among investigators within the Department, as well as with the larger research community on campus, and to promote outreach to the community of researchers.  The candidate should articulate a clear and compelling vision for the future of the DBEI, and the role of a basic science department within a highly regarded academic medical center. PSOM seeks candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense.

All interested applicants are invited to submit their curriculum vitae and letter of interest to the attention of Mitchell Schnall, MD, PhD, Chair, Search Committee for the Chair of the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics, and must apply for this position online.

The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE.  Minorities/Women/Individuals with disabilities/Protected Veterans are encouraged to apply.
