Clinical Instructor of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Fellow)

The Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology/OGGS- Family Planning is seeking a clinical instructor (fellow).  The Fellow must be enrolled full-time for the minimum requirement of the program, a fellow must have satisfactorily completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology accredited by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (CRCPSC) and have acquired knowledge and skill in Obstetrics and Gynecology and women’s health.  Graduates of other residencies may be accepted with prior consent of the fellowship organizers.

Job Description and Expectations:

  • It is recommended that contract with the broad aspects of Obstetrics and Gynecology be continued through the program.Such a recommended contract may include participation in lectures, conferences, office hours, general patient care or in hospital/night/weekend call (10% effort).
  • Research familiarity and experience in clinical and/or laboratory research is an important part of the program.The ability to develop and implement a research plan, to interpret the results, and to demonstrate facility with the scientific method is critical.There must be appropriate supervision by a mentor and sufficient opportunity to develop a research project.The fellow is expected to conceptualize a question or hypothesis and formulate a strategy to answer the questions.Research must result in a thesis or a paper of sufficient scope and quality to be published in a peer-review journal.An in-depth understanding is mandatory as is a manuscript ready for submission for publication with one year of graduation.There should be a progressive involvement by the fellow in the fellowship Director’s research so that the fellow develops the skills to continue to conduct independent research (25% effort).
  • At a minimum, the fellow must complete a graduate-level degree including two university graduate-level courses, one in epidemiology and research design and implementation.The second course must be relevant to the subspecialty.These courses must be completed satisfactorily concluding with an examination and documentation of a passing grade.Attendance at continuing education course, or short, single topic courses sponsored by various organizations, is not sufficient to meet the requirement of the university graduate level courses.It is required that fellows complete the course work sufficient to obtain a Master’s of Science Degree or in public health (20% effort).
  • The fellow is expected to perform all clinical responsibilities necessary to run a family planning service.This includes participation in training both first and second trimester abortions as a allowable by law and participation in all clinical activities related to contraception and sterilization services for women.The fellow may elect to participate in vasectomy training.The fellow is expected to teach medical students, residents, and other trainees in family planning (40% effort).
  • The fellow is expected to participate in global health or Indian Health Science rotation during the course of their training and attend and present at the Annual Fellowship meeting held in conjunction with the annual clinical meeting of ACOG.Not participating in these activities will be allowed only by exception via petition to the national office with permission from the Director (5% effort).

Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum education: MD Degree, active Physician and Surgeon certificate of the Medical Board of California
  • Minimum experience: Satisfactorily completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology approved by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
