The Neuroscience Center (NC) is an international research unit within Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) of the University of Helsinki. NC works towards making fundamental discoveries about brain functions and translation of research findings into improvements in the treatment, prevention and diagnosis of psychiatric and neurological disorders. The research in NC spans across several scales from stem cell research and molecular neuroscience to systems and cognitive neuroscience in both animal and human models. The research groups of NC conduct research in neuroscience at the highest international level and actively apply the results for the benefit of the society. NC collaborates actively with other units of HiLIFE and faculties of the University of Helsinki, Helsinki University Central Hospital, Aalto University and Neurocenter Finland.

LABORATORY MANAGER / COORDINATOR


for a permanent position in Neuroscience Center's Director Michael Halassa's research group. The position will start on 1.10.2023 or as agreed.


The qualification requirements include a bachelor degree in neuroscience or related discipline, fluency in Finnish and English. Prior experience with animal research is considered an advantage.  The successful candidate is expected to have strong organizational and communication skills.


Reporting to Michael Halassa, the Laboratory Manager will be responsible for administrative and technical operations of the lab and will work independently, performing a wide range of routine and specialized laboratory duties. The Laboratory Manager will also create new methods and protocols or alter existing ones. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing training and supervision to laboratory personnel, as well as assisting in the management of laboratory operations and the maintenance of equipment. The successful candidate will assume the responsibility of coordinating and managing lab-wide events, including the procurement and arrangement of necessary resources.


Main tasks:
•    Manages laboratory operations - Train, supervise, and evaluate performance of technical personnel, ensures compliance with university safety and OSHA requirements; participate in university committees when necessary and oversees ordering and inventory of supplies, equipment repair and maintenance.
•    Assists in writing protocols and amendments.
•    Assists PI in lab-wide communications and scheduling such as lab-meetings, external speaker visits, organizes lab-wide outings etc
•    Work closely with the PI in managing his calendar and travel arrangements
•    Assists in animal behavioral training and preparation for surgeries (prepare sterile instrument packs, checklist, animal vitals monitoring, assist in surgery report preparation).


A trial period of 6 months will be applied.

Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) is a new institute established in 2017 that supports high quality life science research across the University campuses and faculties.
