Health Sciences includes three professional schools (medicine, pharmacy, and public health); more than 20 research institutes; and a growing clinical practice that include two hospitals, all working toward fulfilling the Health Sciences’ tripartite mission. Led by the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, it accounts for the majority of the University’s research and philanthropic portfolios, in addition to an expanding clinical footprint that spans the San Diego region. Health Sciences has more than 1,700 physicians and scientists who serve as faculty members for more than 900 residents and fellows, 600 medicine and pharmacy students, and 1,400 graduate students. Its academic programs rank among the best in the country for primary care and research. The mission of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is to educate future pharmacists and scientists to become leaders in diverse fields, transform pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, and improve human health. The School’s aims to accomplish this mission by serving as a catalyst for creative approached to education, research discovery, and multidisciplinary collaborations across health professions. Illustrating this interdisciplinary culture, UC San Diego pharmacy and medical students develop a foundation in the biomedical sciences in common classes and shared volunteer community clinical experiences. Faculty research includes collaborations in not only medicine and public health but also chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering. The proximity of the UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography provides a unique opportunity to explore education and research in marine pharmacology and drugs of the sea. The Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences seeks in its next Dean an inspirational leader with proven administrative experience to work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators, within the School and beyond, to foster excellence in teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and outreach and service. The Dean will work closely with senior leaders, faculty, staff, alumni, and external agencies to achieve the goals that align with UC San Diego’s future plans and academic mission. Description The Dean, who serves as chief academic and executive officer of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, provides strategic and intellectual leadership and administrative oversight for the School’s educational, clinical, research, service, and patient care programs. The Dean collaborates with faculty, students, and staff to create and sustain a unified vision for the School and to advance the School’s quality, reputation, stature, and goals. As leader and champion for the School, the Dean works with alumni and the pharmacy community of practitioners. The Dean reports to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and meets regularly with the Vice Chancellor and the other Health Sciences leaders to provide advice and counsel. The will have a clear commitment to excellence in the education and mentorship of trainees. The Dean represents the School in campus- and University-level discussions and strategic initiatives and works with other school and college deans to advance the educational mission of the University and develop joint educational and research programs. Key Responsibilities Strategic Planning Administrative Management Committee Service The Dean appointment requires a concurrent faculty appointment in an appropriate series at the Associate or Full Professor level. The faculty appointment will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Series will include Ladder Rank, In-Residence with secured extramural funding, Clinical X and HS Clinical.
