The Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in the non-tenure academic clinician track. Expertise is required in the specific area of General Internal Medicine. Applicants must have an M.D. or equivalent degree. Board certified/eligible in general internal medicine is required.

Teaching responsibilities may include working a portion of clinical time on general medicine teaching services at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center or the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center. Candidates will also be expected to mentor medical students and residents. There are also opportunities to teach advanced practice providers and engage in lectures and small groups in the medical school.

Clinical responsibilities may include work on non-resident, acute care hospital services and also may include specialized populations such as long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) service, or consults/surgical co-management. Core practice sites are the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and Good Shepherd Penn Partners/Penn Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine. The successful candidate will build on a strong foundation of clinical and educational excellence that currently exists within the Section of Hospital Medicine and take a lead role in developing and executing the strategic plan for the group with focus on expansion of clinical roles within the health system.

A key element of this position is assuring the delivery of excellent and consistent care across sites and collaborating with health system leadership in identifying, implementing and evaluating quality improvement efforts. The successful candidate will be: clinically active; possess excellent interpersonal skills and mentoring skills; and have significant administrative ability and experience managing physicians and/or advanced practice providers (NP/PA). Experience and facility with a range of clinical scheduling/coverage models and ability to coordinate large groups of providers is essential. The ideal candidate will foster excellent working relationships with nursing and administration and work with the Section Chief and other section leaders to build esprit de corps and a collaborative culture of provider engagement. The candidate will work closely with Division, Department and Health System leadership to improve and sustain high quality clinical outcomes, maintain high patient satisfaction scores, and improve satisfaction and retention of hospitalist providers.

The Director of Clinical Operations will play a critical role in advancing the clinical and operational missions of the Section in alignment with Department of Medicine, DGIM, and University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) strategic priorities. This individual will report directly to the Section Chief, will receive mentorship and career development from senior officers in the health system (e.g. CMO and COO level), will work closely with the Section Program Manager and Medical Directors at each of the above sites.

Specific skills include:

• Experience managing physicians at a multi-site healthcare system preferred
• Outstanding leadership skills, as evidence by prior institutional, regional, and national leadership roles
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Advanced problem-solving skills
• Outstanding presentation skills
• Ability to work in a team environment
• Demonstration of professional competence and ethical standards that allow the individual to serve as a role model for other faculty, fellows, and resident physicians
• Academic experience as exhibited through research, educational, quality improvement, or informatics scholarship, completion of a graduate program or professional certificate program

Given the portion of time spent on teaching services, at least two of the letters of recommendation must comment specifically about a candidate’s excellence as a teacher, in addition to clinical and leadership skills.

The candidate is not required to participate in research or secure grant funding, however they will be strongly encouraged to participate in scholarly activity and collaborate with other faculty within the university.

We seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/women/individuals with disabilities/protected veterans are encouraged to apply.
