Director of Pathology

Department of Biological and Environmental Science, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science at the University of Jyväskylä is currently seeking to recruit a candidate for the position of Research Director starting on January 2, 2024 or as agreed.

Recruitment of the Research Director is related to the established cooperation between the University of Jyväskylä and the wellbeing services county of Central Finland in the field of cell and molecular pathology and the Biobank activities and associated research. The Central Finland Biobank was established in 2015 and operates in connection with the Hospital Nova. The research director is responsible for leading and supervising scientific research and education related to cell and molecular pathology and biobanking at the University of Jyväskylä and the wellbeing services county of Central Finland. The research director is in an employment relationship with the University of Jyväskylä and works at the Faculty of Mathematics and Science. In addition to this, the wellbeing services county of Central Finland may establish a clinical side office (chief physician) for the research director. The Research Director's working hours are thus divided into research and teaching and clinical work corresponding to a possible clinical post.

What do we expect from the applicant?

We require experience in internationally high-quality research and research-related teaching in the field of cell and molecular pathology. For a possible clinical post, the research director must be a licensed physician and a specialist in pathology in Finland (EU). This requires sufficient clinical experience in the positions requiring specialist qualifications.

The applicant must present a plan on how they will promote research and teaching activities in the field of cell and molecular pathology at the University of Jyväskylä and the collaboration opportunities of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science and Biobank. The research director's duties include obtaining external funding to guide doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. The teaching duties of the Research Director include giving lectures on basic, subject and advanced level at the Department of Biological and Environmental Science, as well as participating in teaching on other courses and in the guidance of master's theses. Continuous development of teaching and administrative tasks related to teaching and other academic obligations are part of the duties of the Research Director.

We expect applicants to present strong evidence of their ability to conduct and publish scientific research, international networking, research funding, and teaching. The qualification requirements should be met before the closing time of this call.

The annual salary range will be 70 400 - 81 900 EUR (gross income, including a holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. In the case of a possible side post, the duties and salary are negotiated between the selected person and the wellbeing services county of Central Finland. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

  4. A document listing the names of your five main publications and the links to the publications (freely available) or a maximum of five (5) main publications, numbered in accordance with the list of publications, combined to one PDF file.
  5. A brief written account of the applicant's research merits, research management and application for research funding, as well as a research plan and a vision for how he/she will promote research and teaching activities at the University of Jyväskylä in the field of cell and molecular pathology, and collaboration opportunities between the Faculty of Mathematics and Science and the Biobank (total max 4 pages).
  6. A portfolio of teaching credits including the vision how to develop teaching of Environmental Sciences and a teaching philosophy following the structure according to the JYU instructions (max. 3 pages).
  7. A brief written account of the applicant's social interaction and international cooperation.

Department of Biological and Environmental Science

The research in the Department of Biological and Environmental Science focuses on three core areas: evolutionary biology, natural resources and environment, and biological nanoscience. The Department building, Ambiotica, is an integral part of the University of Jyväskylä's Ylistönrinne Mathematics and Science Research Complex, which includes buildings of chemistry, physics and nanoscience. Ambiotica houses high quality laboratories for bioscience and experimental facilities for a wide range of biological and chemical analyses as well as highly motivated laboratory personnel.
