Doctoral Researcher in Prostate Cancer
Catholic University of Leuven Department of Oncology

The host lab: The Laboratory of Experimental Radiotherapy of the Department of Oncology at KU Leuven has profiled itself as a translational research lab with strong ties to the clinical Department of Radiation Oncology of UZ Leuven. This intense collaboration allows to perform real “from bench to bedside, and back” research with the overall aim to maximize tumour control and reduce radiation-treatment related side effects. Some of the key research topics are the modulation of molecular pathways that determine tumour radiation response in order to induce radiosensitization, the identification of novel biomarkers and the conduction of clinical trials. The host institution: KU Leuven is Belgium’s leading university and is continuously in the top 10 of the worlds’ most innovative universities. Core facilities with highest quality of service include the genomics core, the molecular small animal imaging centre (MoSAIC), MutaMouse (genome engineering service), cell imaging core (CIC), animal facility, microscopy core, electron microscopy, FACS core, mass spectrometry center, phosphoproteomics analysies, and many more.

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated doctoral researcher to further develop our (pre-) clinical research program on prostate cancer.
The PhD position is embedded in the Hypofractionated Focal Lesion Ablative Microboost in prostatE Cancer (hypo-FLAME) 2.0 project, funded by Kom Op Tegen Kanker (KOTK; Stand Up Against Cancer). The project aims to investigate the feasibility and safety of a reduction in the overall treatment time of radiotherapy for prostate cancer patients, making use of hypofractionated stereotactic body radiotherapy with focal boosting. Furthermore, the clinical research part of this PhD project will be accompanied by a translational research part in which immune-monitoring of extreme hypofractionated treatment schedules in combination with focal boosting will be performed.
The PhD project will be realized within the FLAME consortium consisting of the radiation oncology departments of The Netherlands Cancer Institute Amsterdam (NKI-AvL), Radboud University Medical Center Nijmegen (RadboudUMC) and the University Hospitals Leuven (UZL). A close collaboration and multicentric contacts are therefore inherent within this project.

  • A master’s degree within the field of medical sciences;
  • Experience in radiation oncology or urology is an advantage (can be part of a residency);
  • Curiosity and ambition to learn new skills and techniques;
  • Good communication skills relevant for working in an interdisciplinary research group;
  • Fluency in both oral and written English;
  • International applicants are expected to learn Dutch.

We offer to you an innovative, high-tech work environment in the second largest radiation oncology facility in Belgium, where you will be joining a young and dynamic research team. We have funding for a fully-funded 4-year fellowship to work towards a PhD in Biomedical Sciences. Progress will be annually reviewed following the guidelines by the KU Leuven Doctoral School of Biomedical Sciences. Start date is negotiable, any time after April 1st

We will be happy to provide you with further information about this position. You can contact either prof. dr. Karin Haustermans (; +32 16 345838) or dr. Sofie Isebaert (; +32 16 345018).
