The Department of Family Medicine and Population Health (FAMPOP) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is looking for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Health Economics and Public Health.


  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis on the evaluation of health care programs and organization. The PhD project aims to evaluate the cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness of out-of-hours care by general practitioners and the organisation of nursing teams in acute hospitals. Both settings face large challenges, stressed even more by the COVID-19 pandemic. The core of your PhD consists of obtaining cost data and analyze them together with clinical outcome and health care resource data. You will benefit from ongoing data collection within iCAREdata and the “Balancing Nursing Teams” computer-assisted decision support. Different perspectives will be adopted (patient, public healthcare payer, hospital) to inform the decision-making process in the interdisciplinary field of public health.
  • You will closely collaborate with other researchers with complementary skills.
  • You will report study results in writing and orally in the national and international scientific community.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks.


  • You hold a Master degree in Commercial Engineering or Economic Sciences (e.g. Applied, Social or Health Economics).
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • You have very good writing skills.
  • You have a thorough knowledge of R, Matlab or Python, or you are interested to learn scientific programming.
  • You have good communicative skills, and you have an open mindset to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
  • You have thorough knowledge of English, both oral and written.
  • Mastering Dutch is an additional asset
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1st of September 2022.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work within the research group FAMPOP on Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment. Collaborations and discussions with members of the Centre for Health Economics Research and Modelling Infectious Diseases (CHERMID) and Centre for Research and Innovation in Care (CIRC) will be facilitated.
