Scientific Environment

The professorship is assigned to the TUM School of Medicine and Health, one of Germany’s leading medical faculties in research and teaching. The professor will serve as the head of the Department of Internal Medicine II, Gastroenterology at the TUM University Hospital.

The TUM University Hospital is an academic center providing tertiary care and is dedicated to scientific excellence. Collaborations with the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the German Center for Translational Cancer Research (DKTK), the Bavarian Center for Cancer Research (BZKF), scientists and physicians at TUM University Hospital, the data and life sciences at TUM, and the interdisciplinary research environment of the greater Munich area enable outstanding research and teaching. An excellent scientific and clinical infrastructure, supported by state-of-the-art platforms, enables cutting-edge research and high-quality clinical care.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include research and teaching, the promotion of early-career scientists, as well as the leadership and strategic development of clinical care. We are seeking an expert with broad expertise in gastroenterology who addresses innovative and clinically relevant scientific questions aligned with the strategic research priorities of the TUM School of Medicine and Health. Teaching duties include contributions to the field of gastroenterology as well as participation in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs at TUM.

The professorship plays a central role in patient care at the TUM University Hospital and should advance the field through an innovative, forward-thinking, and integrative approach. This includes establishing and further developing the discipline in an interdisciplinary manner in collaboration with other specialties at the TUM University Hospital, ensuring a future-oriented perspective.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with an exceptional international research and teaching reputation and a well-established academic record demonstrated by internationally recognized research contributions. Prerequisites include a university degree, an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification, pedagogical aptitude, board certification in internal medicine and gastroenterology and substantial clinical leadership experience. International research experience, commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, a proven ability to successfully apply for and lead collaborative research projects funded by recognized institutions (e.g. ERC, DFG), and active engagement in promoting early-career scientists with a focus on equal opportunities are expected.

As a rule, the holder of this professorship will not be employed as a civil servant (Beamte) under German law. The duties related to patient care as head of the Department of Internal Medicine II, Gastroenterology at the TUM University Hospital, including the right to bill for additional medical services, will be regulated separately through a head physician contract with the university hospital’s board of management.
