Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech), located 15 miles northeast of Seattle, is the only public institute of technology in Washington state and has provided high quality education since 1949. We offer 8 applied bachelor's degrees, 43 associate degrees and 91 professional certificates in 42 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. This is a full-time Annual Renewable nursing faculty position, with the possibility of converting to Tenure Track. The faculty member is responsible for providing the technical skills, instruction, and evaluation to support the use of simulation for the College of Nursing. The successful candidate will coordinate and facilitate simulation experiential learning activities and opportunities for students in the Nursing Department. Responsible for assisting faculty in creating, preparing, delivering, and evaluating high-quality simulation experiences. Assist in developing simulation scenarios and facilitating simulation experiences by applying evidence-based standards of excellence. Work with the faculty and Associate Dean to update all simulation-related experiences and curriculum. As a member of the nursing faculty, the successful candidate will teach a variety of learning instructional objectives related to the nursing programs at Lake Washington Institute of technology. Faculty also assists in evaluating and modifying courses when necessary to meet the needs of the changes in industry. The position reports to the Associate Dean of Nursing Programs.



The teaching assignments will vary to reflect changes in staffing and enrollment. A portion of the teaching may occur in late afternoon, weekend or evening hours . In addition to teaching, this position involves advising students, developing programs and curricula and participating in college governance, department/division and campus-related professional activities.



Essential Functions:

  • Maintains laboratory environment to assure lab security, cleanliness, and safety
  • Develops laboratory teaching schedule each semester
  • Establishes and maintains policies and procedures to guide student and faculty use of laboratory spaces
  • Assures maintenance of lab equipment, MSDS binders and hazardous waste management systems
  • Ensures labs contain necessary equipment and supplies to enable faculty to utilize lab effectively for teaching activities
  • Operates, repair, calibrate and program high-fidelity simulation equipment
  • Conducts program simulations, applications and scenarios in coordination with nursing curriculum outcomes
  • Monitors lab equipment and performs routine assessments including preventive maintenance to ensure proper functionality
  • Identifies new technologies, receives input from faculty and submits recommendations to Associate Dean, concerning integration into lab activities
  • Orients faculty and students to lab equipment through use of seminars and tutorial videos
  • Coordinates requests and purchases of supplies and equipment
  • Receives, audits, and stores supplies in designated locations, and updates lab directories
  • Implements and coordinates standardized patient program by recruiting and training actors to provide students with realistic assessment simulation scenarios
  • Assists in the development of clinical simulation lab student guidelines, grading rubrics, and related documents
  • Submits written and verbal reports to Associate Dean at conclusion of each semester
  • Provides lab tours to prospective students and visitors as requested and promotes positive image of lab facilities
  • Serve as the college's point-of-contact simulation resource and provides timely and effective response to simulation requests from faculty, staff, and academic partners.
  • Collaborate with Nursing faculty to continually develop and update simulation experiential learning opportunities, as well as prepare and deliver such experiences for the College's students.
  • Assess ADN program curriculum needs and assure integration of simulation-based activities
  • Provide reports and recommendations to the course faculty and respective Associate Deans, as appropriate.
  • Orient learners to the simulation environment and lead effective pre-briefing sessions. Provide orientation and continuing education for staff and faculty relative to simulation-based activities. Make recommendations related to student learning needs and equipment, particularly regarding simulation.
  • Plan, develop, instruct, and evaluate Standardized Patients. Maintain records of completion of student return demonstrations and simulation experiences.
  • Assist in the implementation of simulation standards and best practices and provide faculty with evidenced-based guidelines to ensure positive and consistent learning experiences for students.
  • Evaluate faculty, simulation staff, and students as necessary as related to simulation (including standards for simulation facilitation, debriefing, participant assessment, and learning evaluation.)
  • Plan simulation schedule and scenario supplies, and assist in simulation-related procurement. Responsible for rescheduling students for additional simulation experiences when clinical site experiences change.
  • Organize simulation experiences (pre-briefing, scenario, and debriefing activities) and efficient use of lab time.

  • Basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and clinical nomenclature
  • Knowledge of simulation equipment hardware and software
  • Ability to work independently, problem-solve and make decisions effectively
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team in demanding college environment

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in nursing from an accredited college or university required
  • Current RN License or ability to acquire a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Washington State
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical nursing experience (full or part-time, professional and graduate work included). Recent medical/surgical nursing clinical experience preferred
  • Hold or be eligible to obtain a professional-technical certificate to teach in the technical area; valid CPR/First Aid/Blood-borne Pathogens certificate required
  • Demonstrated familiarity with clinical undergraduate nursing education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with simulation and managing simulation experiences
  • Certification as a Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE)
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in a clinical setting
  • Experience in writing program curriculum, program administration

Supplemental Information:Placement on the faculty salary schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. Salary is negotiable depending upon qualifications; salary is for an academic year (173 days) and as may be adjusted according to the faculty bargained agreement. Working hours are usually Monday through Friday between 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, with some evening advising and other flexible hours as needed. Summer quarter employment may be available based on student enrollment. This is a full-time, Annual Renewable position with the possibility of converting to Tenure track position. Medical, dental, and insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; State Retirement Plan; sick leave is equal to 1 day per month, effective upon employment.
