Grant Tenure Position in Learning Health Systems

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at Simon Fraser University, in partnership with the BC Academic Health Science Network (AHSN), seeks applications from early career scientists or scientist-practitioners with an outstanding research record to be appointed as a grant-tenure Assistant Professor in Learning Health Systems. Funding is available for an initial three years with renewal subject to funding availability. We seek a scholar who has a PhD in a relevant field, and who has demonstrated strengths in combining theory and methods.

The ideal candidate has expertise in health services and policy research, and will want to build scholarship in the emerging field of learning health systems. This position aligns most closely with the following research challenge areas in the Faculty of Health Sciences: Health Systems and Health Policy; and Big Data and Social and Technological Innovation.

This position is funded by both SFU and BC AHSN, with time commitments and activities being split accordingly. The post-holder will assume the role of Assistant Scientific Director at the BC AHSN.

The Faculty of Health Sciences was created in 2004 with a mission to improve the health of individuals and populations and to reduce health inequities through excellence in interdisciplinary research and education, in partnership with local, national and global communities and with a commitment to social justice. The successful candidate will join a diverse and dynamic team of more than 50 multi-disciplinary faculty members and will have the opportunity to engage with and teach outstanding students in the PhD, MSc, MPH, and BA/BSc programs. FHS maintains collaborative agreements and partnerships with the BC government, regional health authorities, research centres, and provincial, national and international agencies. Our community engaged work is exciting and at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary work in health. The faculty includes three Canada Research Chairs, five Endowed Chairs, and eight additional faculty members with external salary awards.

BC AHSN was initiated by the BC Ministry of Health as a key enabler of a scientific and learning approach to continuous improvement and strategic transformation of BC’s health system. Its creation, in 2016, reflected a need to address a gap in the Province’s health research environment, particularly the need to better connect provincial health research to clinical practice. As an independent provincial organization focused on creating collaborative partnerships and aligning priorities and resources, BC AHSN seeks to create an environment in which research and innovation are more readily translated, applied into clinical practice and policy, and evaluated for patient benefit and value. An overarching theme for all BC AHSN activities is the Learning Health System. As such, BC AHSN connects and catalyzes the Province’s collective expertise and resources, bringing together patients, government, health authorities, academic institutions, professional groups and a host of organizations across BC’s research, health care, professional and educational sectors. The processes we are developing and the resources we bring will help BC attain measurable improvement in health and health care.

To apply for this position, please submit a full curriculum vitae, a letter of application, a brief statement of research plans for the next 3 years (two page maximum), a teaching and graduate student mentorship/supervision statement (one page maximum), and the names and contact details of three academic and one non-academic references. The teaching requirement for this position is 1 course per year, thus the teaching statement must detail teaching experience and interests and identify up to three undergraduate courses of teaching interest with reference to the existing FHS course offerings. Please also outline any contributions to academic life in the form of service. These materials should be submitted electronically to:

The search committee will begin to review submitted applications on August 30, 2019, however, the position will remain open until filled.
