Role Description

The University of York invites applications from exceptional individuals for the position of Head of Department & Professor of Evidence Synthesis for the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD). The role of Head of Department will be for a term of four years, after which the appointee will continue as a research professor. The successful candidate will have a world-class reputation in evidence synthesis as well as the leadership qualities required of a head of department and will be expected to retain an active research portfolio alongside leadership of the department.

CRD is at the forefront of evidence synthesis, achieving a top ten place in REF21. For over three decades CRD has generated robust and trustworthy evidence to inform health and public health policy and practice, underpinned by a programme of methodological development and commitment to knowledge exchange. It has played a key role in promoting the use of research evidence in real-world decision-making.

Following the retirement of Prof Lesley Stewart (the current HoD) the role offers an exciting opportunity to build on current success and lead the next phase of CRD’s development.

The Head of CRD will provide collaborative academic leadership, nurturing a culture of excellence in research, and of collegiality, respect and commitment to equity. The successful candidate will:

  • Cultivate a Shared Vision: Develop and articulate a compelling vision for CRD, enhancing its national and international reputation for research.

  • Support Collaborative Research: Champion and facilitate collaborative research within and beyond the wider University.

  • Foster a Connected Research Community: Nurture a supportive and inclusive research environment that values diversity, equity, and open intellectual exchange.

  • Facilitate Effective Resource Management: Oversee the Department’s financial operations, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities through collaborative decision making.

  • Serve as an Ambassador: Represent CRD and the University, engaging with external stakeholders and contributing to the broader research community.

  • Guide Strategic Implementation: Translate strategic goals into actionable operational plans, guiding the management team and staff through collaborative leadership.

  • Engage in Collective Faculty Leadership: Participate actively in the faculty's collective decision-making regarding strategy and finance.

Key Requirements

  • A proven track record of collaborative and strategic research leadership, with the ability to inspire, support, and empower colleagues.

  • PhD in a relevant health, science or social science subject (or equivalent) with an outstanding record of research achievement.

  • A strong record of collaborative research and impactful publications, commensurate with a professorial appointment.

  • A strong commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community.
