Junior Professor of Global Nutrition and Health

The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in research and teaching. The University of Bayreuth’s newly founded Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition & Health on the new campus in the nearby town of Kulmbach is currently seeking to appoint a

Junior Professor of Global Nutrition & Health

with tenure track to W3

as a fixed-term civil servant at pay grade W1 (minimum salary: € 4,548 per month) to commence as soon as possible. This tenure track professorship is funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States.

We are looking for an early-career scholar who is able to work independently and who possesses a high degree of development potential. The applicant should represent the field of nutrition and health with a global orientation in research and teaching. The professorship is designed to establish a link between producing and ensuring a safe supply of food worldwide, the social and cultural aspects of nutrition, and the effects on health in a global context from a scientific point of view. One focus of research activities should be on the cultural, political, economic, and/or ecological factors influencing nutrition, physical activity, and health at the micro and macro scales in both developing and industrialized countries.

The successful applicant will be actively involved in setting up the new Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition & Health. This includes, in particular, the conception and establishment of new interdisciplinary B. Sc. and M. Sc. programmes, such as the M. Sc. "Global Food, Nutrition & Health". The aim is to recruit a university lecturer whose research orientation and project experience (ideally abroad) can help to link the individual fields of the faculty and participate in inter- and transdisciplinary research projects. Further university links are possible with the focus area "Food & Health Sciences" or subject areas from the University of Bayreuth's other faculties such as African studies, medical management, human medicine (Erlangen/Nürnberg – Bayreuth), and sport science.

The ability to teach in English is a prerequisite for employment, as substantial parts of the new faculty's teaching programme will be offered in English; international applicants must be willing and able to teach in German within three years.

In addition to the general administrative requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, proven excellence in teaching, and the ability to carry out scholarly research (generally demonstrated by the quality of the applicant’s doctoral research). If the candidate was employed as a graduate assistant or research associate prior to or subsequent to earning his or her doctorate, the total duration of the doctoral research phase and the employment phase should not exceed six years. The requirements given in §7 of the university’s Bayreuth Track Regulations also  apply.

The successful candidate will initially be hired as a fixed-term civil servant for a period of three years and may be extended for an additional three years upon successful evaluation as a university lecturer in the third year of employment. The teaching load is currently set at five hours of instruction in the first phase and seven hours of instruction in the second phase.

The performance agreement, which defines the criteria for the interim and tenure evaluation, is drawn up by the university and the applicant during the appointment negotiations. The agreement shall include criteria in the categories of Research and Academic Teaching, and may also include Third Mission and Academic Engagement. The appointment to a W3 professorship depends exclusively on the outcome of the tenure evaluation. After successful tenure evaluation, the candidate is appointed University Professor (W 3) as a permanent civil servant. Further information on the Bayreuth Track process can be found under https://www.uni-bayreuth.de/en/university/work- at-the-university/appointment-process/index.html.

The University of Bayreuth views the diversity of its staff as an asset and is expressly committed to the goal of gender equality. Female scholars and any persons who can help make the research and teaching profile of the university more diverse are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants with children are highly welcome. The University of Bayreuth is a member of the best practice club Family at University, and it offers “dual career support” for career-oriented partners of highly qualified employees. In addition, an extended audit conducted by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) returned a favourable review for the University of Bayreuth’s commitment to internationalization. All qualifications being equal, applicants with disabilities will be given priority.

Please send your cover letter and supporting documents (CV, list of publications, list of courses taught, external funding obtained, as well as copies of all diplomas and certificates) to the Dean of the Faculty Prof. Dr. Stephan Clemens via the web platform https://uni-bayreuth.berufungsportal.de by xx.xx.2020. The documents will be permanently disposed of in accordance with data protection law following the conclusion of the appointment process. If you have any questions, please contact the Dean (fakultaet7@uni-bayreuth.de).
