The School of Chemistry is a leading centre for both teaching and research excellence in Chemistry in Australia – developing cutting edge knowledge to solve real-world problems. With a proud history beginning at the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts in 1833, predating UNSW, the School comprises of 35 academic staff, 40 post-doctoral research associates, 160 postgraduate students and 35 Honours students. Although based in the Science Faculty, its research and teaching are cross-faculty, involving the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine.


About the role

  • $95K - $123K plus 17% superannuation and leave loading
  • Fixed Term - 5 years
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)


This Associate Lecturer / Lecturer position will contribute to the teaching, educational initiatives and coordination of the undergraduate program within the School of Chemistry. Concomitantly, the position will play an active part in the School’s strong chemistry education research programme, providing a focus on organic chemistry.

To be successful in this role you will:

Essential Criteria, Level A and B:

  • PhD, specialising in chemistry, chemistry education, or a cognate discipline.
  • Demonstrated potential for high quality teaching, especially at an undergraduate level.
  • Demonstrated initiative and a high level of motivation.
  • An ability to work as part of a team, to meet deadlines and to prioritise competing demands.
  • A track record of excellence in research publications, relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing new initiatives and in solving problems.
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in the innovative use of technology in teaching.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the capacity to work collaboratively and foster harmonious workplace relations.
  • Demonstrated experience in contributing to administration in an academic environment.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office and administrative IT (email, web-based forms, etc).
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.


Level B, in addition to the above:

  • Track record of high-quality teaching at undergraduate level.
  • Track record of educational research, for example by publication of education papers, or presentation of education seminars.
  • Evidence of a student-centred approach to teaching (e.g. by student surveys, reflective practice, etc).
  • Demonstrated experience with Moodle, or other Learning Management System(s), from the instructor perspective.
  • Solid theoretical knowledge and technical expertise in the development of chemistry experiments.
  • Evidence of contribution to university administration such as serving on committees, Open Days, conference coordination, and seminar coordination.
