# Job description

The post is to build capacity for research and education within the Department of Women and Children’s Health under the School of Life Course and Population Sciences.   

 

The post-holder will have a background in one of the Department’s strategic research areas: premature birth, parturition, reproduction and developmental biology, or other pregnancy complications, and be expected to realise the potential for integrated research activity across the wider School.  The post holder will have an excellent track record in research; a proven ability to attract external funding to support their research programme, and a good record of publication in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals. Whilst primarily a career research focussed post, the post-holder will be expected to take on teaching within the MSc in Women and Children’s   Health (e.g. module leadership, teaching, assessment and administration) and contribute to other relevant teaching within the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine.  Experience of teaching at a relevant level (e.g. BSc/MBBS or MSc teaching) and in an area related to Women and Children’s Health is therefore essential.  The post will be predominantly based across two campus sites, St Thomas’ Hospital and KCL’s Guy’s Campus.  Teaching activities will be in the main buildings across KCL’s Guy’s and Waterloo Campuses, but could also be at other sites. 

 

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract. 

This is a full-time  post – 100% full time equivalent.# Key responsibilities

- Establish a successful research group related to Women and Children’s Health   
- Publish high impact research that contributes to the discipline and the Faculty’s research record  
- Apply for and secure peer-review research funding and PhD studentships  
- Develop and strengthen links with other academics and King’s and externally to promote research and secure additional funding 
- Take a leadership role and deliver relevant teaching and tutorials, i.e. lead a module in the MSc in Women and Children’s Health or equivalent; contribute to BSc and MBBS teaching 
- Obtain relevant HEA accredited teaching qualifications  
- Assist in setting and marking of in-course assessment and examinations and attend assessment boards 
- Supervise and train other undergraduate and postgraduate research students  
- Act as a personal tutor for undergraduate and postgraduate students 
- Carry out teaching and research administrative duties as required and represent the Department on School, Faculty and University Committees 
- Undertake appropriate professional duties, such as serving on the scientific committees of conferences, editorial boards of journals, grant funding committees, and involvement in professional bodies 
- Be collegiate, positively promote a positive research college, embed EDI in all activities and undertake public engagement

# Skills, knowledge, and experience 

**Essential criteria**  

1.       PhD in area related to Women and Children’s Health, physiology, biomedical sciences, or related area

2.       Proven experience of teaching subject(s) related to Women’s Health and Children’s health and related biological sciences to undergraduates/postgraduates

3.       Evidence of ability to write competitive, peer-reviewed grant applications

4.       Publication of high impact research papers

5.       Knowledge and practical laboratory skills in an area of research relevant to the Dept. of Women and Children’s Health

6.       Supervisory/leadership experience in an area of research relevant to the Dept. of Women and Children’s Health

7.       Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team and to share and encourage good teaching and research practice

8.       Evidence of actively promoting a positive research culture

9.       Committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, actively addressing areas of potential bias. 

 

**Desirable criteria**

10.   Research expertise in cell models and or preclinical models

11.   Research interests in molecular pathways and cell/tissue omics

12.   University teaching qualification

13.   Evidence of external recognition of expertise (e.g. grant/paper reviewing, invitation to speak at conferences)

14.   Mentoring of junior staff in early career development

15.   Experience of university administrative duties

The School of Life Course & Population Sciences is one of five Schools that make up the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine at King’s College London. The School unites over 400 experts in women and children’s health, nutritional sciences, population health and the molecular genetics of human disease. Our research links the causes of common health problems to life’s landmark stages, treating life, disease and healthcare as a continuum.
